Orrrrr.....
I could cut the mounts off of the uprights of one of my wrecked mil bars and send them along with my A Frame to alice and then you get them welded on grab someone with a pintle hook (oh OK since its only 5 bolts I can undo the one on foz and send that if needed) slide the Aframe between the front of your vehicle and the tow vehicle and down the road you go, no trailer needed.

Right, I've found one transport company that may take the Defender with belongings inside - they need to confirm a few things first. But because it's not a "standard vehicle" - i.e. it's bigger than a hyundai - they're looking to charge for two spaces on the truck, so they're looking for $2k+ to get it there.![]()
And of course it has to be able to drive on and off, so I need to head round to strangy's this afternoon and see if she'll at least start to do that.
Truck doesn't leave till next monday and will take 7-10 days, so I'm going to continue to see if there are any other quicker and cheaper options...
Thats a good start - at least you've got something concrete to work with now (albeit not a cheap option).
The charging for 2 spaces thing is pretty standard for a normal car carrier that runs multi-level trucks. Its the height that takes up 2 normal slots.
Smaller operators that just run tilt trays's or beavertails usually don't charge like that, but I'm guessing there's not a surplus of those in Alice

Here is the "solid tow" setup. Been on the receiving end of this - it's not to bad.
Towed vehicle needs a driver for steering and brakes.
Dave's A frame probably doesn't need a driver.

Yeah, will post more updates depending on what they say. Time (visa) is also proving to be a worry though again, because we've been in Alice a month already waiting for auspost, it'll be 7 days before the transporter will be heading out from here, and another 7-10 days to Melbourne, plus time for repairs there. There was a truck going this morning, but unfortunately it was already filled up. I'm going to use it as my if-all-else-fails plan, but I'm going to continue to explore any other options.
Was that price all the way to Vern's?
If you could at least get it to Adelaide I'm sure there would be quite a few options to get it to Melbourne.
Logistically more complex, but could work out quicker.

IIRC it cost something like $2600 11 years ago to get my 130 from The Alice to here and it came via Melbourne, (Patrick's) so that freight cost sounds about right.
That's to the depot in Melbourne - would still have to trailer it to Verns (not really a problem). Company policy for any other operator (Adelaide or Melbourne) was no personal belongings/no high vehicles, so on and so forth. We're still calling round as we speak, explaining the situation and seeing if anyone will make an exception, either to Adelaide or Melbourne.
Surprised that this is proving to be so difficult....
Just going to throw this one in the mix but.........
Relying on the kindness of Forum members and a borrowed car trailer (Or one way hired car trailer) how about assembling a volunteer team of relay vehicles to tow a trailer with Mikes Landy on it in a series of short hops.
NT and SA members get Mike to the Vic Border and then Vic members relay Mike to Verns place here in South eastern Vic.
This was no one person has to do the whole trip of 2400 ish km (Except Mike and companion) and it gets the ball rolling.
The NT to Adelaide portion is the biggie at 1500 km and will be the hardest to get volunteer tow drivers for but even if its for part of the way from Adelaide with a team of relay vehicles passing the baton (Or in this case the trailer with Landy) its getting the ball rolling.
Thoughts?
