    Engine Shot...

    Sitting in Alice Springs at the moment, just after figuring out that the Defender which has been home and my means of travelling for three years now, the engine's just **** itself. Melodramatic as it sounds, I'm pretty ****ing cut up over it right now.

    Long story short, the turbo that I thought had failed hadn't, and I have clouds of smoke and a loud hard knocking from a now underpowered engine. also have a lot of gas escaping from the oil filler, probably from gas blowing past one of the pistons. Stopped into Sutton Motors here, and their opinion is either a blown valve, or more likely one of the pistons are shot. Solution, replacement engine.

    Not sure why I'm posting here to be honest - have gotten past the urge of driving it out into the outback and taking a gallon of petrol and a box of matches to it. I guess I just need a place to vent for a minute, with people who know what it's like to invest time and energy into something that's more than just a vehicle to them.

    Anyhow, has anyone got any advice? The obvious solution is to swop in a new engine. Does anybody rebuild engines anymore? According to Suttons, engine + freight + fitting would be in excess of $7000 A rebuild from TRS in Adelaide should come in around the $3700 mark, so maybe limp to Adelaide and hope that the engine doesn't go into a runaway state on the way, or just die completely? Was toying with the idea of dropping in an Isuzu engine sometime in the distant future if I ever had the money - should I just bite the bullet and do that? What would the costs involved be?

    I realise that I sound a bit like a melodramatic dick in the above rant, but this is just the icing on the cake of the past few months. A bit of feedback would be appreciated.

    That's tragic news Mike. I'm only new to the forum and it was only yesterday that I was pouring over your posts regarding your rebuild and thinking if I would have the patience and resolve to undertake such a project. Although i cannot offer any technical advice for you in this situation I sincerely hope that good karma shines on you and find a resolution that doesn't break the bank!

    99.999% it won't make to Adelaide. Look into trucking it down would be my suggestion.

    And shop around. Prices will vary enormously if I recollect correctly.

    I would open it up, see what's dead and just replace that bit without being talked into a full rebuild. I have a mate with a fleet of defenders, that's all he does and they keep going surprisingly well.

    Ring around a few SA based trucking companies. See how much they would charge vs rail freight ( was 500 bucks Newcastle to Perth for my mate). The thing about the the territory is more gets shipped in than out so companies are sometimes happy for any backload they can get.

    you can get rebuilds done.

    sounds kinda dramatic but check the simple stuff first, pull the rocker cover, set TDC on the crank and watch the valves move, if you're lucky youve just thrown the timing belt over a tooth or 3 valves have met and damaged pistons and you might just get away with a new pot and rings along with a bunch of gaskets.

    What bad luck,hopefully a reader living in Alice will be able to put you up at their place.To get you mobile,the head will have to come off to locate the blown piston,then the sump to check state of crank.If it's ok,replace piston and away you go...but really,if you have stripped it to that level you may as well change all the rings and big end shells on the other cylinders.If the crank or bore is knackered,get on the net for a 'good' used motor and shop around for freight cost!I bought a low km Mazda diesel from Qld to WA for $75 road freight, shrink wrapped on pallet with ancillaries.If all that fails,I reckon you could get a motor from Turners UK and still have change from $7000.Don't forget some part suppliers offer free post, use code aulro ie roverparts.com.au,British 4wd offer express post if you are in a hurry!

    Yep, Have a look at what you have got first. Take the sump off and the rocker cover. Turn it over by hand. see what's what. Then take head off and look again. replace dodgy piston put everything back and away you go.

    Something you do in quiet corner of caravan park if you were discreet.

    Head off, check for blown gasket between cylinders and into a pushrod gallery is my first thought.
