I'm beginning to like option 4A lot. But yes, of course it depends on finances, which I'm looking into freeing up at home as we speak. I haven't gotten to lift the head off yet - as timing would have it, the person I'm travelling with had a sudden death in the family early yesterday morning, and the last 24 hours have been taken up with figuring out how to get her back to NYC from Alice Springs in time for the funeral. But all going well I should be lifting the head off this morning sometime and I'll have a better idea of what the problem might be.
Have done mate - she appreciates it. But yeah, we were certainly lucky that we were back in coverage - if it had happened two weeks ago when we were out bush with Bruce, we'd never have heard a word.
And despite the best assurances of anyone in a uniform (police, rangers, local council, etc) that we most definitely WILL get stabbed in Alice Springs if we camp up for the night, the people here have been extremely good to us. Local prison officer gave us his place for the day to make arrangements and phone calls, and forum member strangy is giving us a loan of a few tools that we need in order to lift the head off.
Seeing as you and others have done Isuzu conversions, what would be a rough figure for a conversion? For ease of sourcing parts, I'd more than likely go with a stock engine, bellhousing and gearbox, and use one of the_grubb's kits to mate it to the rest. It's only an idea for now, but no harm to get a feel for what would be involved.....
I'll tell you what I know - as long as SWMBO never sees this...
- 4BD1 truck engine - $2-3K
- Isuzu gearbox $500-1000
- Grubb's kit - ???
- Clutch kit - $4-600 (should be able to scavenge some used parts for nix to get it rolling)
- V8 Radiator and conversion of inlet/outlet orientation - $500
- Radiator hoses - $100
- Radiator shroud - ???
- PAS steering hoses - $150 (likely less)
- EDIC cutoff actuator from Mazda T3500 truck $50
- Engine mounts (pair) $150
- Exhaust mods maybe $100
- 12V Alternator - $150-600
Thats just a quick list off the top of my head, and conservative (ie on high side) pricing.
Radiator shrouds for 4bd1 were still available from LR when I last checked a couple of years ago, but about $300 from memory.
Fab work would be engine mounts (chassis part), throttle cable bracket, EDIC actuator mount plus engine side bracket, air filter mount (probably use your 300tdi one temporarily), exhaust to connect existing system.
Alternatively engine and gearbox from a Isuzu Stage1 (which is what I installed) would give you all of what you need if you were OK to stick with a LT95 to get you going and back Ireland under Isuzu power.
The LR specific parts (engine adapter and bellhousing) are the rocking-horse poo bits to locate individually if you wanted to source truck engine and use LT95, but they are around. Pretty sure there are members on here have them spare and might be willing to sell for a worthwhile project.

Mike sorry to hear of your plight, and condolences to your companion.
Alice always seemed safe to me but I would not camp in the river.
Theres a rebuilt 4BD1T on ebay, I reckon a pretty fair price consideing you could get another 30 years out of it , ~$200 a year is pretty good.

all the best
Much appreciated. The initial post was a bit over the top in my opinion - it was just one of those "what the **** else could POSSIBLY go wrong" daysErika passes on her thanks for your condolences.
Was actually looking at a Rangie on Gumtree as a possible donor - perhaps best to read my post on it, rather than repeat myself two or three times across the forums - http://www.aulro.com/afvb/showthread...58#post1803458
Can use the v8 shroud, just turn it upside down, can't remember if it needs minor trimming, but fits surprisingly well.
Bought up by the first guy who went to look at it this morning![]()
