    Tuning in the Olden Days...

    You know that you're getting old when you not only recognize these things, and know how to use them, 'cos you used to own one.

    I still have a Colortune, a Carbalancer, Stromberg mixture tool, timing light.
    You never know when you might need one.
    The Colortune is handy even with injection, as if you suspect it is rich on idle you can 100% check by looking in the combustion chambers.
    Admiittedly I am 63.

    I still carry in my Disco toolbox the special tube socket for removing the main jet from SB Stromberg carby as found on most early Holdens, never know I might need it one day, Regards Frank.

    Colortune - never owned one but know what they are about.

    Carbybalancer - gave mine to my BIL when I sold the Rangie

    Watched a mate tune a small engine (pump IIRC) by the colour of the exhaust flame, he was an aircraft mechanic who cut his teeth on piston engines.

    Interesting Frank, I still have one in my toolbox as well, screwdriver bit one end for removing the plug and long socket on the other end for removing the jet. Looked at it recently when I was searching for something else and was going to pull it out then decided to leave it there - my line of thought is that soon after you took it out you would be needing it, not that I have any holdens any more, but that's just the hoarder I am. In the late 60's I used to know an old bloke at the Ford dealership in a west Qld town who could tune engines by ear, he would just turn the dizzy until he reckoned it was right and it usually was spot on.

    Tuning in the Olden Days

    My Dad was in the RAF in motor transport in WW2
    He learnt his trade there and it was the norm to tune carbies and timing by ear and he worked on straight eight's in England.
    When I was growing up a lot of my youth was spent watching and assisting
    my older brother and dad work on cars (mainly Holdens) although anything with a piston he could repair.
    It was only as you got older could you appreciate how brilliant a mechanic he was, and art form really when he would work on all aspects of a vehicle compared to today in a world of mostly part replacement.

    I'm no mechanic and my fathers gift was definitely passed on to my older brother Frank....... However I do have the distinction of introducing him to Landrovers - he has a 87 RRC

    I'm now 52 and my Dads been gone for many years .....thanks Superquag brought back some fond memories
