Hey folks, Just after some advice. I had been ill and unable to drive recently. My 99 TD5 Defer 130 had been sitting idle for about a month. I went out for a quick trip to the shops. When I returned home, I turned the key off and removed it. The engine kept running however it sounded laboured and a smell started to emit from the engine bay. I put the key back in the ignition and turned it on and the engine started to run normally. I again turned the key off and the engine did not cease and sounded laboured. I then pulled fuses from the fuel supply and it did not stop. I ended up disconnecting the earth from the battery and the engine finally stopped.
Prior the the month sitting idle it ran perfectly and had just gotten back from a 6hr drive from out bush and a couple of around town trips.
Any ideas on where I might start to rectify this issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

TD5 are all electronic, and will run - albeit unreliably without the fuel pump, as the injectors can (as long as no air leaks) suck enough fuel on their own.
The ECU controls the injectors, and tracks whether the ignition is on or off. I'd be suspecting a dodgy ignition key, or perhaps oil in the injector loom at the ECU.
ignition key, sticking relay, or a short somewhere in the primary power loom.

Easiest way to stop a errant Td5 would be pull the black plug that goes in to the injector loom, just under the front drivers side engine cover, do it regularly to make sure there no oil in the plug.
Sounds like the starter is possibly staying engaged. That would explain the smell, also.

Thanks guys!
I will look into these possibilities today if the rain holds out and report back.
And the Winner is......
Oil in the ECU Harness.
I cleaned out the plug and socket at the ECU end and seems to be running fine...for now.
