			1996 Disco 1 Brake problem
		
		
				
					
					
				
				
		
			
				
					Hi all, I am new to the forumn having recently purchased my first Land Rover. It is currently still unregistered as the brake pedal is too spongy. It has a brand new master cylinder fitted, but I believe (from what I have read on forums)that it needs the ABS pump cycling to expel air. The car is currently at Mallabula (near lemon Tree Passage). Is the anyone in that area that has the diagnostic tool that can cycle the ABS pump on that model? Or other suggestions? I have tried to get the car to skid with some results, but it seems to need more.

What says the workshop manual about it ?
keep searching the forums, there might be some "manual" way to do it.

					The ABS system on that model can't be power bled using a diagnostic tool, but They have pretty rubbish brake feel anyway, if you are getting it to lock brakes you are doing well..
Just perform a normal brake fluid flush, if in doubt just get a brake specialist to flush the fluid, as Frank suggests.

					Hi Tom.
Most if the ABS stuff you read on forums is D2 specific. The D1 with ABS can be tricky to bleed. Try taking the nipples out and coating just threads in wheel bearing grease before replacing and re bleeding as some people report having air leak back in past the threads. When I do mine I also crack the union going into the Abs modulator to help bleed the master cylinder.

					Well, the story continues. I have refitted the master cylinder after bench bleeding it (just to make sure). I replaced the Proportioning valve. Still no go. What I have noticed though is that when pumping the brakes, you can see that brake fluid is coming in in a little fountain at the rear of the master cylinder reservoir. It would appear that the secondary circuit (front of MC) works as the disco has back brakes working well (in reverse it stops very well). There is a lack of pressure to the front disks though, it does little more than clean the surface rust from the rotors - virtually no stopping power until you have nearly hit the floor. I suspect that the abs modulator is faulty. It seems as though the primary circuit somehow cycling with the secondary circuit. I have the abs modulator with me in Bathurst and I will be going through it with a fine tooth comb. From what I have read, I am not the only one who has had this sort of problem with the abs mod.
