Diesel Leaking from Tdi Injector Pump

Well it must be my lucky day (not) . Finally completed my project D1 and have got it ready for its roadworthy this week.

Wasn't happy with the fuel pump as the primer didn't work and I was unsure about its fuel pumping performance, anyway, simple job, so I replaced it with a new Delphi one.

What I now have is this.

Obviously the new fuel pump has more pressure than the old which is too much for the injector pump.

I remember a thread not long ago with someone having a similiar problem with BK and others offering an easy solution (as opposed to a full rebuild) but can't find it.

    Any suggestions ?

BTW. Happy Chinese New Year (I reckon I must have run one over somewhere ........................)

Mystery Disco 1 300 TDI injector leak

I think this is the thread you mean!
Funnily enough I've been looking into the same problem, found this thread and saved it!
I did have the original thread from the lr4x4 forum that's mentioned, but can't find it....

Mine's not dripping too badly so haven't done anything about it yet, (apart from occasionally mop up the mess) as there are bigger leaks elsewhere to worry about first!!

Let us know how you go if you try the fix.
    Cheers

I fixed mine a few months back. This thread -> FIP ING HELL!! - Tdi Fuel Injector Pump Leak

I had a bit of a moan in that thread but it turned out to be quite a simple and cheap fix in the end.

Part numbers are in that thread, goth them from MTQ - no more leaks.

That's the one I'm after, thanks. I'll pick up the bits next week and have a go.

Re: Diesel Leaking from Tdi Injector Pump

    Cheers Manic,

I remember reading your thread on the subject too - hope it didn't knock too many years off your life expectancy!!

I've actually just been and had another look at mine and it's leaking more than I thought so might have to get fixed sooner rather than later.

So how long did it take you all up? Doable in less than a day if you've got the seals all ready to go?

    Cheers,

If you went through all the steps without hesitation it would take you no more than half an hour to get the spindle out, same to get it back in. Changing the seal, you just cut the old one off and push the new one on. The bush in the top cover I had MTQ press on for me, took them 10 min's to do that and run a test on 2 injectors.

So if possible order the parts from a diesel workshop and when you go to pick them up take the the FIP top cover with you and have them put the new bush in, go back home and put it all back together with your new spindle seal and top gasket.

All going as it should, easily done in less than a day.

    All done

Only 'problem' now is that the idle speed is now about 950 RPM (was about 750 previously), and yes the spindle/throttle lever splines are back exactly as they were, the max/min stop screws are exactly as they were previously and the max fuel screw is precisely where it was previously.

So my question is, to adjust do I just simply wind the idle adj screw back until the revs drop or do I undo the bolt on the throttle lever to wind back the spindle to drop the revs thus leaving the 'range' of the throttle unchanged.

Power is up and the vehicle is going much better than before changing the lift pump which bought on the leaking of the injector pump. I've read posts on this forum previously that suggested the fuel pump in the injector pump would be strong enough to compensate for a faulty lift pump (under normal driving conditions). This was not the case in this circumstance; yes the engine did still run but was noticably down on power. If I hadn't had a 300 Tdi previously to compare to I might not have realised.

So the moral of the story is if you reckon you're down a bit on power try a new lift pump but be prepared to fix your injector pump as it is 'shocked' with 'back to normal' fuel pressure.

IIRC - The idle is set by the position of the throttle linkage on the splines. For large changes, you swap onto the next spline but for fine adjustment, you slacken off the other bolt to adjust...

    ...if that makes sense?
