    ZF 4 Slips

    Hey Guys

    Looking into getting a 94 Disco with a ZF 4 thats having some issues
    he says the Gears Slip and the Gearbox place said best to just get a second hand box and replace.

    as iv never had a ZF 4 before any advice guys

    If the gears "slip" then the odds are the gearbox is needing an overhaul.
    Seeing the cost is about $3500 plus fitting, this is probably unattractive if you are buying an old cheap car.

    The problem with buying a second hand gearbox is that you are buying "A pig in a poke " as it could be just as bad and you are up for 2 sets of fitting etc etc at the very least.

    My advice is that unless you get the car for virtually nothing you walk away, or you should factor in the cost of a reco transmission.
    This is one of the two most expensive things to fix in a D1. Would you buy it if the engine hardly went and smoked profusely?

    Have you checked out the Disco, could be low oil level, check oil level with car on level ground, idling in Park or Neutral with engine and gearbox COLD, so check it as soon as you start it up, Regards Frank.
