Anyway, on topic, I've seen Salisbury axles break on stock trucks, with open diffs. If it were me, I'd get some decent aftermarket axles. It is not worth the hassle to deal with broken axles.

Cheers for putting that up, Ive got a handfull of various rover half shafts kicking around here that I keep on hand and was going to take a photo to illuminate the difference in the waisting and shouldering of the rover VS Sals half shafts when I realised, I dont carry sals halfshafts because I havent had to replace one since I got to Ipswich which has been near enough to 6 years now.

Just broken a half shaft in my S3 Detroit locker

To add to this conversation and to the "if you do an axle you do your Detroit" debate, I've just broken the right side Salisbury half shaft on my S3 109" Military which has had a Detroit locker in it since 2010 with standard half shafts and drive hubs.

I was pulling a heavy load up a steep gravel incline in low range today, got to the top which was bitumen and had a sharp turn, did not disengage 4wd fast enough, heard the rear wheels screech, a bit of a bang, thought nothing of it, drove 10kms at 60kph, got back onto gravel and one of the rear wheels starts digging up the dirt.

Sensing something was wrong as the rear wheels never break traction separately on dirt, I jacked it up with the handbrake on, left wheel does not turn forward or back, right wheel spins freely in either direction. I can easily remove the left half shaft, but the right half shaft seems to jam when I have it almost all the way out.

Who wants to place bets on the extent of the damage? I'm pretty busy these days so will probably just drive it to the mechanic on Monday (5kms away).

Tj it's quite common to shatter the internals of the Detroit when you do an axle
However the Salisbury unit has relatively large internals in relation to axle size

I always found it necessary to run up rated drive shafts with these as the cheese axles twist then eventually snap

"if you do you'll also wreck the Detroit" situation seems to be of almost mythical status. If anyone has a link to someone reporting it actually happened to their landy I'd love to have a read.
    Steve
I have broken a long axle without hurting the Detroit . Just pushed the broken bit out with a broom handle. This was 20 spline in an RRC
I also have twisted both long and short by about 30degrees without hurting the Detroit at the Nissan Trials.
That was when I got The Detroit broached and Jacmacs.
I think it may depend on how the axle broke. Mine broke with wheelspin on a wet track at Mt Walker then finding rock. Clink! Driver stupidity.

Detroit 1, Axle 0, yes the Detroit survived! It was cleaned, pulled down and inspected prior to the new axle going in.
