Hi all,
If you we're given a 5000lb warn winch would you use it on your 4wd? The winch has been stripped down and regreassed and appears to work well. I know 9500lb seems to be the minimum now days but is it worth having even if you have to double up on the wire most of the time?

I have a Warn 6000Lb portable winch that I have had for 25 years . It fits into a square hitch.
I have never used it for myself but it was able to recover a couple of other cars , one that had fallen off a causeway.
I had to be winched out of New? creek south entry and a Navara with a 9500lb winch was able to pull my RRC and camper trailer on a single line pull, so if I wanted to set up and delay everyone , I am sure the Warn with a double pull could have done it easily.
So as long as you carry winch extension straps and 2 snatch blocks you will get yourself out of anything getoutable, but you won't win a speed contest.
Remember that there comes a point when 2 recovery methods are required eg a bull bag or hilift Jack as well as a winch as I once experienced with a club member bogged in "vomit" and a 12000lb winch just pulled him along on his belly. We only extracted him by placing a bull bag under the front , inflating it then letting him roll over it, to lift the front out.

Philip, have you got a photo of your portable winch? I've seen one or two a long time ago and always thought they were a good idea - as long as your back is up to carrying it.
I'll second the comments about carrying a couple of blocks and enough line. There's plenty to read out there these days about this sort of thing, so it's not too hard to work out how to do it.

I had a 5000lb warn winch on my Suzuki worked a treat on it and I used it many many times.
I have a 9500lb warn on my disco; when I make a rear bar up it will go on the rear, I am tossing up between a hydraulic or a high mount warn on the front.
Stuck in "vomit" on a single line pull I have smoked it, after pulling it down it was the grease not the motor, so I am also considering a unit with more grunt - hence the reason for thinking about the hydraulic as it has no huge current draw.
