From what I have read on this forum Timken bearings are the way to go when rebuilding a series gearbox. My local bearing supplier tells me that Timken only make roller bearings and not ball bearings, therefore I cannot get a full set of Timken bearings to do the job.
Hence I am confused to say the least!

I'm new here and this is my first post (I've got an order for a Discovery MY13) which is why I joined the forum, but I sold bearings for years and can help you here.
If you want the best brand of bearings, Timken for your tapers and then SKF or FAG for the others.
You'll pay more, but they'll last longer - how much longer versus cost is a personal perception.
I'd give your local CBC or SKF branch a call as they'll probably already have a kit, or be able to make something up.f
I've sold all these brands here in Australia and in the UK for automotive and industrial applications, so I've got a reasonable understanding of what's what - I also like to get the best quality, and IMHO and brands like NSK and NTN are really good, they're used in all the Japanese race cars, inc. ralley, uphill racing, etc... so have reasonable pedigree and I wouldn't blink twice at specifying them for a gearbox I was using, but it's a personal thing.

Has someone listed alternate brand kits for a gearbox and transfer rebuild?
I would be grateful if I could be directed to such a thing if it exists.
Also for rear axle and diff?
Same for front wheel Brg and drives.

Apparently there is real Timken and generic Timken. The boxes look the same but have a subtle difference. The local bearing shop showed me but I have forgotten and leave it up to him.
Perhaps barts could tell us more.

A generic range of Timken? I doubt it - there's nothing in the part number that specifies a range of quality or place of manufacture.
For example a Set 37 is a Set 37 cup and cone, there's no Set 37 A or Set 37 B to say A is a higher quality bearing than B - he might have been talking about counterfeit Timken bearings? There's a market for that, and for that reason if you wanted Timken bearings then I'd stick with the big distributors like CBC, BSC, SFK or Blackwoods.
Brad - SFK do kits which is a direct equiv in quality, CBC do kits that use NTN bearings which are perfectly fine, as mentioned they're used in rally cars in Asia and are perfectly fine.
