Normal temp gauge position 97 discovery

Hi, just picked up a 97 Discovery, done about 2000kms already. Love her to bits. Can anyone advise where their temp sits. Mine gets to just over half quickly and never moves. On 3 occasions she has boiled header tank but temp never changed. About to fit new thermostat and flush radiator. Any tips please.

    Thanks

    TDI or V8?

Boiling header tank = overheating. When were these 3 events? All in the last 2,000kms?

Yep, all since I picked her up. First one was very minor , maybe the last owner over filled. Second one was after only a short run to local shops then backed Disco down our short but steep driveway. The last one was this week, after about a 20 min low range run up a fair mountain to go mountain biking. I ran in drive at low speed but.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Sorry, V8 auto.

I don't know much about the V8 sorry, but thermostat and flush of radiator is a good place to start. I would not be driving it if it keeps boiling though. I can't imagine it should ever boil... Probably doing damage every time it happens.

D1 temp gauges are designed to not frighten the operator, so they are buffered to stay in the middle over a large temp range. Unless you fit an aftermarket temp gauge/alarm you will never know until its too late.

And seeing its a V8 the engine may not be overheating at all but pushing coolant out from either a failed head gasket or most likely a cracked block and loose liner. All too common I'm afraid but costly to fix properly with new stepped "top hat" liners. After my experience of the last 2 years with 3.9's I don't want to see one again without signs the owner has thousands to spend on a reco engine. Patches don't work.

There is only one bodgy fix that allows the engine to continue to operate and that is to run the hose from the front of the engine to the rad differently. Remove and plug the rad connection, then drill and thread a suitable nipple into the expansion tank just under the pressure cap. This way the bubbles coming out of the block don't blow out a litre of coolant every trip. I've done this to a couple of V8's and its kept them alive for a while.

Did a radiator flush and fitted new thermostat today, new 50/50 anti freeze. Is there any simple test for other issues. I checked oil fill cap for signs of water, all clear. No odd signs in coolant as well. I was told the transfer case is cooled via rad?? Is this true??

Thanks for your replies and help.

No. The gearbox (assuming you have an auto) has some limited cooling in the radiator, as well as an external cooler.

The only cooling for the transfer box is the airflow underneath.

How many Kms does it have on it, and how much of it's history do you know?

    Cool

I have only owned it for three weeks. On the 2 shorts trips after the thermo change, it goes to half way within a minute, it now climbs to 3/4 after a while and sits there. Up until then the temp gauge never moved at all?? Thinking old thermo must of been jammed. Is it normal to sit so high?? Running red 50/50 Nulon.

    Thanks again
