The gearbox internally is the same.
Here I go again. My D2 TD5's auto finally expired, with virtually no drive at all. I'll get it rebuilt when money get's less tight, but I've been looking for a second hand one to make the car mobile again. There's a bloke selling one for a good price, but it's out of a 2001 V8. Seems to me that a bellhousing/convertor swap would be sufficient to fit it in, but 'm known for being wrong. Any thoughts from you great people?
The gearbox internally is the same.
I dont know about a td5 box but the tdi zf4hp22 auto is valved differently to the equivalent year v8, but maybe the td5 electronic part changes all that. I think i read that the torque converters are different as well, somebody more knowledgable than me should chime in soon.
Richard
The torque convertor and the gearbox electronic control unit differ, otherwise the gearbox itself is the same.
If you had a copy of RAVE you could confirm this. It is a very handy reference & can be procured via "Daves Shop"
The Bell housing is completely different and the Governer extension housing is different to the V8. Microcat lists different part numbers also for the extension housing
The TD5 one is longer in the part compared to the V8 one.
We recently had 2 side by side and it was clearly evident that the governor housing was different.
I not say they can't be changed, The TD5 gearbox mounting has bigger mounts, than the smaller V8 ones, hence the governor extention housing is longer in size to fit the mount ,if that makes sense
"The ZF 4HP22 was used in both the 4.0L V8 & the Td5.
The ZF 4HP24 was used with the 4.6L V8 and is 15mm longer.
Different torque convertor housings are used to accomodate differences between the V8 & Td5 engine interfaces"
The above is extracted from RAVE.
Despite being the same gearbox, I was always under the impression that the TD5 and V8 autos were different in their setup, eg shifting etc and although they will drop in, they do not suit the other motor.

Wouldn't that be able to be overcome by the various computer settings though?
I know you can set your ECU to the different engine and transmission via a nanocom or similar.
IF they're mechanically the same then any 'set up' issues should be sortable. Keyword "If" though.
Hmm, some reading material.
