Thread: Time to do my first service on my td5 opinions would be great

Whay I do:
5000kms engine oil Penrite HPR5
10,000kms engine oil, oil filter, centrifuge filter, air filter clean or change and grease everything.
20,000kms as 10,000 plus diff oils, gear box oil, transfer case oil
40,000kms as 10,000 & 20,000kms plus brake fluid, power steering fluid, clutch fluid and coolant.
Well above what is required, but ensures everything is ke[t in good order.

I would not worry about the air bags. Probably cost more than the car is worth. I have never heard of anyone doing this. This has been discussed before here and LR changed the 10 years to 15. I won't be changing mine in 15.

SWMBO has a 98 Fairlane and there is no mention at all about changing air bags.

I also change the oil centrifuge filter. Don't do the screws up too tight on the case.

The fuel filter is up to you but they should last at least 20,000 if not more. The fuel filter is worth as much as the the 2 oils and the air filter if you use genuine filters. I only recommend genuine filters, there are none that have tested better - LR got this right.

Oil Ido in my 2002 disco every 5000k all filters Ido every 10000k use only well made filters and synthic oil I also use Liqui Moly MO2 anti friction this has served me well

The filtration system on a TD5 is second to none, and using quality oils can go well over 10,000 km between changes with no risk.

What a classic quote and and true

If you are following a 10,000km interval schedule then 140K will be a major service interval, so you should consider doing pretty much the lot:

- Engine oil
- Centrifugal and full flow filters
- fuel filter
- Auto trans fluid (and filter if you are keen)
- Front and Rear Diff oil
- Transfer case oil
- Air filter

That will give you a baseline to work from for future services. The arduous service schedule which most people follow uses 10K km/12 month intervals, so given the low KMs you'll travel you'd probably do a minor service in 12 months and then another major service in 24 months.

VEHICLES FITTED WITH SUPPLEMENTARY RESTRAINT SYSTEMS
The seatbelt pre-tensioners (where fitted) and airbags must be replaced every 15 YEARS

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT :
- At 120,000km (72,000 miles) or every 6 years, which ever is sooner, all hydraulic brake fluid seals and hoses should be renewed. All working surfaces of the caliper cylinders should be renewed where necessary.
- Vehicles used extensively in arduous/off road conditions - check the road wheel speed sensors, brake pads and calipers for abrasive wear at 1500km (1000 miles) intervals.
- Air suspension vehicles used extensively in arduous/ off road conditions will require the compressor inlet filter to be replaced at more regular intervals.
- The power steering/ACE fluid reservoirs should be replaced at 250,000km (156,000 miles)
- When the vehicle is used in dusty or field conditions or deep wading, frequent attention to the air cleaner may be required

I still do 10,000+km OCI's on the Patrol @ 420,000km and i still haven't had to adjust the rockers in 120-150,000km so something musn't be wearing, and it uses flat tappet lifters, not roller lifters like a Tdi or roller followers like TD5.

Unless you are doing sub 20km runs every single day, 5000km OCI's are just wasting decent oil that's worth a bucket load more than Tombies analogy
