TD5 Discovery Auto Tans service around Liverpool NSW ?

Hi All, does anyone know someone who knows TD5 automatics reasonably around liverpool area and who wont be trying to have a lend of me.

My auto shifts and works fine, but want to service properly as do not know the history and will be towing with it.

On that note, do they have or need a seperate tran fluid cooler ?

Are the auto boxes pretty tough or are they prone to breaking ?

    Cheers

Really any Auto transmission place should be able to "service" a TD5 auto as it is a ZF which is common to many European cars.

There is really no"service" possible. All that can be done is to change the filter and oil.

I was quoted $210? AFAIR recently at Gosford , and $350 for a full flush with synthetic fluid , which I think is pretty expensive, although the ZF approved synthetic Castrol TransmaxZ is about $80 for 4 litres , and 8 is needed for a flush. I DIYd 2 changes and filter for about $200.

The cooler is pretty big IMHO and much bigger than the V8, as there is more heat build up as the Torque converter stall revs is 2800 on the TD5 and it is the TC slipping which creates heat.
They are tough if they have nice clean synthetic fluid and are not overheated by eg towing a 3 tonne van. And you use low ratio to keep the revs over 2800 when possible if in sand etc.

Last time I went to a specialist for auto trans was when I owned Chryslers, normal mechanics would do an oil and filter for trans, the specialist used to adjust and check settings and knew what to look out for when doing visual inspection.

I have built engines before, so no drama for me to just do oil and filter.

Will be towing 2 tonnes, maybe 2.3, so will tow in 3rd from what your saying so the converter is locked, is it electronically locked ? can this be re programmed ?

If they only need new oil and a filter and are pretty much bullet proof if done regularly, then I may do it myself, I will be doing all the other things.

I don't know much about heavy towing , so hopefully someone who knows more will answer.
No the converter is not electronically locked above 2800, that is its stall speed, when the inputs and outputs equalise in speed, so no so much heat is generated.
TC lock up speed is electronically controlled by little Electronic elfs who decide whether to lock and unlock. AFAIK on light throttle above about 72kmh in 3rd or 4th , the TC will be locked ( not towing) but unlocks if % of throttle increases.

I haven't had enough experience with mine to know how to control lock and unlock but someone else will answer I am sure.
BTW changing the filter and oil is pretty easy and sounds well within your capabilities. Much better than a RRC as you don't have to move a crossmember!

Why not try ZF themselves at Arndell park as not far from Liverpool.

I rang them a while back and they do rebuilds etc but i'm not sure about servicing, they should be able to put you onto a recommended workshop in any case.

To replace all the fluid you need a transmission shop that has a transfer pump as otherwise half the fluid is trapped in the torque converter etc so just draining fluid from the sump is only doing half the job. Also as Philip A mentioned i'd also recommend switch to synthetic fluid, especially if your towing as it handles the heat much better than mineral based fluid.
    Cheers
