    other than Ashcroft who makes LT230 underdrives?

    Hey,
    Apart from Ashcroft have any other companies tried to make a underdrive for the LT230 transfer case?
    The reason I ask is because Ashcroft don't make them anymore and 2nd hand underdrives are around the 3500 - 4k mark.

    Cheers

    I do not believe Global Roamer (Roverdrive) decided to push through with the underdrive project.

    From what I understand Maxi Drive 'rock crawler' gears are a straight replacement for standard low range gears ie: High/Low becomes High/Extra Low

    Where as Ashcroft are an additional reduction gear ie: High/Low becomes High/Medium and Low/Extra Low

    yes, Id say High/Low which when the underdrive is selected becomes Mediumish/Extra Low.

    1st gear High range underdrive is still lower that normal Low range 1st gear.

    Maxi gear set when fitted becomes extra Low

    Underdrive becomes Ultra Low

    Also of Benefit.......

    If you fit an underdrive, what you will also find is that you are effectively able to split both the High and Low ranges as I did in a previous 4WD.

    With the Overdrive I used to have in my (4-speed) Cruiser, I noted these benefits;
    I was able to drive on the highway in overdrive unladen at the speed limit,
    I was able to tow on the highway without overdrive to maintain fuel efficiency and a strong torque curve (but definately not at the speed limit,
    I was able to engage Overdrive and Low range to make sand, and mud driving much easier on me and the car,
    When I used Low range without Overdrive I was able to use the 3.9Lt N/A diesel torque, and rear locker, to climb some very rough and steep country.

    You may ask why is this relative?

    Another (albeit Expensive) option (and probably undesirable option) to your Underdrive could be fitting an overdrive and also change the ring and pinion.

    I offer this example;
    Defender with a 300tdi and R380, and 1.4 LT230 as standard has a crawl ratio of 43.40:1 meaning at 1000RPM in first low you would do about 53M/min
    Without Overdrive in 5th at 110km/h you are doing 2761RPM.

    With an Overdrive (I am using the GKN ratio of .72) and Ring and Pinion change to compensate (and I would strongly suggest a Discovery transfer case as is the example I give), once again with the 300tdi and R380, but with the 1.2 LT230 you would have a crawl ratio of 58.22:1 meaning at 1000RPM in first low you would do about 43M/min. With Overdrive in 5th at 110km/h you are doing 2291RPM (I understand that this many revs at highway speed may be undesireable).

    Just a few thoughts anyway.

    Cheers, Davo.
