    EBC Green Stuff Brake Pads

Has anyone got any idea where I can get a set of EBC Green Stuff Frt Brake Pads for my 1996 D1 at a decent price? I Can get them from U.K. (I'm in OZ) for 32 quid but they want 40 odd quid to ship them!

Below is the reason I want to try them.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------

Firstly about me - I am a mechanic/technician of some some 38 years experience (albeit the last 10 have been working in the I.T. world). Although not being "on the bench" as such my experience has been in Dealership service departments with Mitsubishi, Holden, Honda, Fiat, Lancia, Nissan, Chrysler, Jeep to name a few. I am also on my eighth Land Rover having owned various classic RR's and Discovery's.

    Now my issue.

I am trying to get my D1 to have a decent brake pedal feel and to pull up better.

Trouble is the other cars I have been driving (my RR Classic with complete D2 mechanicals/brakes/interior - RIP - and a borrowed D2 TD5) both have fantastic pedal feel and they pull(ed) up much quicker than my D1. I fear I may have been spoiled as I haven't driven the D1 for over three years.

In my quest to get a better pedal/pull up better I have replaced all the brake lines with stainless/PFTE ones and have bled the brakes multiple times (3 litres of fluid) using a non return valve in a bottle of fluid. I have also bled the master cylinder numerous times. The car also runs drilled/slotted solid front brake rotors.

If I exhaust the vacuum in the booster with the motor turned off by pumping the pedal the pedal is quite reasonable. If I pump the pedal with the engine running, apart from the very first initial application, the pedal does not get any harder. just a little bit higher. So I looked at the front wheel bearings, adjusted them and this made no difference.

So, If when driving I give the pedal a light jab prior to applying them (a habit I picked up from my motor racing days) the pedal is sort of OK feel wise, the brakes seem to have decent initial bite but it still doesn't pull up in the last ten metres. I don't even think I could get the wheels to lock & the ABS to cut in on dry bitumen.

I use EBC red & found they were alot better then standard off the shelf in terms of feel/grab & also fade.

The only time i noticed fade was after 15km of mountain driving an needed to pull over quite quickly due to stuff falling over in the back, pedal had to be forced a bit more but when i got out the car i noticed it got to the point of smoking quite good too so it was expected.

Im running stock solid rotors, stock lines etc so im guessing it would be alot better again if it were in your disco with the same pads.

cheap to get in the U.k as you said but i combined it with a good sized order so extra post cost was next to nothing

I had the same problem with mine.
10 years ago I had new rotor and pads installed.
Then it sat for about 7 years with very little use.
In October last year it was time to start driving it again.
Brakes were working, but it took a fair bit of pedal and would not pull up in a hurry.
New booster and master cylinder made no difference.
The pads were like new as far as wear so they were last thing I suspected.
But pads it was, maybe they had become hard over time, lack of use?
I recently replaced the vacumm pump (300tdi) as it was leaking oil. Got a slightly better pedal feel.

    I used these pads,

    Rear brake pads - 110/130 to ZA614447 - Lockheed STC1601Brake pads-front- Mintex STC2952
    '95 Defender 130 Single Cab
    HS2.8 TGV Powered
    ------------
98% of all Land Rovers built are still on the road.
The other 2% made it home.

Cost difference between Britpart and Genuine seals: £2.04. Knowing that your brakes won't fail at any moment: Priceless.

Try Lucas/trw pads there very good but hard on rotors but no worse then the the ebc reds. IDE make sure none of the pistons in the callipers are seized or not rolling back in to the caliper when you take the foot off the brake.
but at the end of the day if you pump all the vacuum out of the booster when the engine is off and the pedal is high and hard you prolly won't get it much better.

Have you checked that your booster isnt cracked around the master cylinder mount bolts area, it took me along time to find that problem and then all was good.
