How much too far up the dipstick was 1.4 litres?
On friday evening I tackled getting the extra oil out. Turned out I was 1.4ltrs overfull, glad I pulled the extra out.
Realised my mistake, as I buy my oil in 20ltr pails, I have a 5ltr container I decant into for my measurements. Somehow this time I got my measurements wrong.

Fwiw, my Landy mechanic always recommends filling about 3-4mm above full line. I dont know what correlates to in mm.
Had a BMW 2009 3 series. My mech used to recommend a slight overfill because of the amount of oil it used between services (1litre per 15,000 k's). Maybe your guy thinks the same way. Would not do it to Her Majesty. I just check it once a week and fill accordingly.
BTW the Beamer did not have a dipstick. You would have to drive it for 10 minutes and the computer would tell you the level.
Cheers
Not for the filter as I queried it post service and before our Kimberley trip as I was suddenly paranoid the oil level had risen. He said we always fill them so. I didn't query the reason. Will ask next time although not sure when that will be.
The ideal oil level is just under the full mark......never over....
If it burns or leaks oil.....you need to top it up between services......not overfill it....
If you have too much oil in a diesel.....there's a chance it may get into the combustion chamber and you could have a run away diesel......
Isn't it just possible that the manufacturers of diesel engines are aware of the danger you describe? If so, then there is also the possibility that they put the line for the full mark just a tad lower than they would on a petrol motor?
Maybe there is a bit of a safety margin.
I wonder how the people who are concerned about a couple of millimetres over the full mark think that their engine is able to survive off-road situations where the oil level at various parts of the sump fluctuates wildly.
