Get underneath, & inside the engine bay, & physically grab & try to move all heat shields ETC, go for the least problem before thinking the worst. But above all, don't panic .Bob
G'day all.
I have had a mechanical rattle when turning off my 04 TD5. It has been there since day dot so I'm not all that concerned about it but I would like to know what it is. Surly if it were the harmonic ballancer it would have let go long ago. Can't vouch for it's condition but it has only done 86000ks.
It runs as quiet as a TD5 can and the rattle only happens the moment you shut it down.
Thoughts??

I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
Hmm....
Before my Vicous fan bearing let go I was getting a squeaky rattle on shut down.
Having a look at the Harmonic Balancer despite it's low KMs is cheap insurance, as opposed to one detonating and taking out your crank shaft.
Second what bob said, find anything loose and tighten the bejeezus out of it![]()
Mine, which is new to me having had Counties up to now, has developed a rattle & squeak on shut down. It has a relative new harmonic balancer & just had the viscous fan replaced by a LR mechanic so I'll be interested on opinions too.
Mine has not developed the rattle, it's had it since new. I pulled off the acoustic cover and turbo heat shield ages ago so it's niether of these. I've heard a similar rattle on toyo diesels on shut down.

The centrifuge spins down from 15k rpm so you can hear a whirring that decays over 30seconds or so.
Try starting and shutdown with the fan/drive belt removed, should eliminate a few things!
And put a jack under the sump to take a little weight try again might eliminate engine mounts etc![]()
Check the N/S engine mount heat shield
Mine has an annoying rattle and freely spins on the mount
Have a look at this site, www.discovery2.co.uk , a disco centric site, but TD5 specific as well. Go to " faults & fixes' a good article on the TD5 crankshaft pulley. Bob
