    rubber reconditioning

While waiting to save the money to rebuild and engine for my '61 SWB, i am taking bits apart to pretty them up. I have today stripped the headlight hub completely. The rubber seals between the hub and the headlight sockets is somewhat dry and brittle. As such things are hard to come by new, is there anyway i can make it all soft and cuddly again?

First get three medium-sized teddy bears (preferably brown with waistcoats), a box of baby-wipes, a gallon of Lanox and two kilograms of Eider duck down. Cut the heads off the teddy bears, followed by the arms and legs, then put the limbs aside (they're to be used later). Add the teddy bear torsos and heads to half of the Lanox in a blender at slow to medium speed, gradually adding the eider down and the rest of the Lanox until a smooth consistency is reached. Then set speed to "high" and throw in the arms and legs from the other side of the room. Allow the mixture to settle, then pour into a tray and cover with baby wipes. After half an hour setting, pour the mixture over the rubber being treated and leave for ten minutes before removing the rubber and hosing down thoroughly to remove any fragments of teddy bear or duck.

If this doesn't work, it might be possible to still get these parts through some of the UK suppliers. They often have obscure-sounding parts at surprisingly cheap prices.

    Cheers,

    John
