    2.25 diesel head bolts

    Hey folks,

Now while I'm waiting for my Series IIA parts catalogue to arrive (don't know why I didn't get one years ago), I wish to pose thee a quick question. I am getting various and differing feedback from a few suppliers as to the correct part numbers and quantities for head bolts for a 2.25 diesel (I want to replace all mine when the head comes off in the next few months).

I've been told that I need:

    247051 HEAD BOLT x 9
247723 SET BOLT FOR CYLINDER HEAD x 5
    247683 HEAD BOLT SHORT x 2

    ...and also:

    279649 x9
    247723 x 5
    247683 x2

Could anybody possibly enlighten me? 247051 and 279649 don't exactly look like the same part number. Also, I would have expected that the headbolts for the diesel be stronger than those of the petrol. Some UK suppliers don't seem to be making any distinction.

    Thanks,

    John

    hey John,

Why do you particularly want to replace the bolts?

I cannot recall any strident recommendations for doing so, but we can always learn...

What he said. No need to replace the bolts unless they are damaged or rusty.

With series landies these days, 2nd hand original parts are often better than aftermarket new parts.

Good questions. I am only thinking of it as it will be the second time I have had the head off that engine in the last decade or so, and I have no idea what happened before that. A lot of the literature, and a number of people, recommend changing the headbolts if they have been torqued and retorqued a number of times. I am certainly happy to be convinced if this is really not necessary.

    Thanks,

    John

I have never snapped a 2.25 head bolt. My engine was purchased as a rebuilt long motor that was NOS from a mining company, I then pulled the head off to check the motor before fitting. NFI knows how many times my head bolts have been torqued, but probably a few...
