Aligning inlet manifold after head machining

Does anyone know the calculation for how much to machine the inlet manifold after cylinder heads have been surface ground on a 3.9 V8?
Also how do you measure how much has been removed form the cylinder heads in any previous surface grinds? Is there a standard dimension for cylinder head height or do you do a trial and error fitment of the manifold with engineer's blue or the like to see how well inlet ports align?

    G`day ,

usual way is the material is removed from the inlet faces on each head .

The people that ground/faced you heads should know the formula , if not i have it here in a book but would need to look it up .

There are std measurements for head thicknesses , on each end corner you will see small flat pads , two tall and two short and it will depend on which 3.9 heads you are using as to the measurements , if you give the casting numbers they will say which you have as all heads can interchange as far as bolting up goes . Start will be ERC or HRC , etc.

do you take that much off the heads that it causes misalignment of the manifold? I can understand this with a race motor we built for drag racing but you would only be removing thousands of an inch off your heads wouldn't you?
