1997 Defender 110: Indicator cancels too soon.

    Hi,
when I approach a traffic island to turn right and turn the on right hand indicator the indicator self cancels as soon as I start to turn right. Can this be adjusted?

    regards.

Yes, remove the surround from behind the steering wheel and you will see a plastic collar around the steering shaft (blue on mine) with a protrusion that on rotation passes by the indicator and triggers the return spring. I just disabled mine so I can switch on/off the indicator when I feel appropriate - it takes some getting used to and annoys anyone else that drives it but hey - my car my rules .

It might fail a roadworthy test if you disable return on the indicator, so maybe try adjusting first..

To adjust the cancelling ring, you should first remove the steering wheel to have access to the ring.
Turn it so that the slots are vertical and the lug with the arrow points to the left in the direction of the indicator switch.
Fit the steering wheel and take care that the indicator cancelling forks locate in the cancelling ring slots.

The indicators on our Defender have been doing this since we had her, so any tips on how to solve would be appreciated.

Firstly, our steering wheel isn't straight when the front wheels are straight, the wheel points slightly to the left... which (I suspect) might be contributing to the indicator self-cancelling problem, which is...:

When turning right, with the indicator turned on first, a slight turn to the right cancels the indicator. I often have to drive around roundabouts and larger corners with my left hand holding the indicator on.

So if anybody could help with:
    - straightening the steering wheel... is this the wheel itself that need to be altered? The workshop manual for the removal of the steering wheel is pretty complicated (57 - Steering) - includes the removal of many bits in the engine bay.

    - indicator self-cancelling... though this might fix itself if the above problem is fixed...

    Thanks all!

    Hi Michael,

Get a wheel alignment and tell them to make sure the wheel is straight. While you could remove the steering wheel and turn it a notch you may not be able to get it straight due to the course nature of the teeth.

I'd do this first then see the above instructions re the adjustment of the indicator.
