Question Is changing diff centres a DIY job?

This is a bit of a newb question as I lack experience with differentials. To date I've generally replaced the entire diff on a few vehicles without ever opening them up.

I'm wanting to fit ATB LSD's to both the front and rear of my D2a (Ashcroft ATB LSD) and also Ford Falcon Pursuit ute (Harrop TrueTrac). I get the basics, pull the axels out, open the back of the diff up, etc. and I'm comfortable with that, but I was reading that often clearances have to be checked and shimmed etc. Is this straight forward or am I better off find a decent mechanic to do this job?

If you are just replacing a complete diff centre with C&P already set up then yes its a simple diy swap, but i am sure that the ATB's are just the centre without C&P or housing so unless you have the right tools its not a diy job.

ATB is basically a full diff overhaul, pinion can be left alone, so really just need to set the backlash. I changed cw&p when I did mine to Ashcroft h/duty, its not as scary as you think once you get your head around it. A lot of trial and error for me, but now I find it not to daunting at all.

twr7cx Does HArrop do a special diff as there isn't a 24 spline in the list on the link?

What made you go for the Harrop instead of the Detroit TruTrac from Lukey8

Lucky8 Llc. - Take the road less traveled...

    Cheers

    Matt

Matt, Harrop are the only company that make a TrueTrac to suit my Ford Pursuit ute. The US TrueSpeeds are only suitable for the later model Falcons.

Has the ute got IRS ?? either way if you do the falcon first you will find the LR diffs a breeze, So much easier to set up a banjo diff.

Scotty, I'm currently going through what you are. I'd love to have a crack at it myself and if i had someone with me that knew what they were doing, then no probs. If i was to try and work it out myself, then I'm going to give it to someone else to do. Not worth the potential catastrophe if you get it wrong imo.

I'll be making a few calls tomorrow based on a few suggestions from fellow forumites.

Good luck and if you do end up doing it yourself, let us know how you go.
