There is no distinct difference. Ratios are the same. Late model D1s got the LT230Q, same as the D2, however for a while the D2 had no centre diff lock fitted.

I think they have just been refined a bit more but basically the same. Some people put the D1 one into the D2 to get the centre diff lock if there model did not have it. I don't know if the D2 can go into the D1 though as I was comparing my two I have on the shed floor and noticed the spot for the speedo pickup is not there on the D2. The speedo signal must come from somewhere else on the D2.
    Cheers, David.

Ben, was it a matter of no difflock internals fitted, or just no linkages etc to engage?

There was a stage between around 2001/2002 and the D2a that had no internals. Earlier and later D2 ones had the internals. The exact date can be found on the forum somewhere.
    Cheers, David.

Not only are the circa 2002 ones missing the internals, the casting for the front output housing is also very different.

There are a number of other internal differences in the d2/td5 defender era cases, for example the removal of the stupid crush tube for setting the intermediate gear preload, and replacing it with a much more solid spacer (which is available in different lengths to set the preload)

D2 speedo pick up is generated from the wheel sensors as opposed to a TC sensor.

Details of when C.D.L was removed is in Sticky notes for the D2, but no date or vin of when they were refitted.
