    Water leaks!

My series one land rover which has a 186 holden engine in it has been leaking a lot of water at the water pump. I've noticed that my fan has a lot of movement in it too, back and fourth. Wondering if it may be leaking out behind the fan and how do I get the fan off, never taken one off before

    Question

That will be a water pump bearing/seal.
    Simply buy a new pump.

Disconnet neg battery terminal. Loosen four fan bolts, loosen and remove alternator bolt and push the alt towards the engine so you can get the belt off after the fan blade come off, you may have to loosen pivot bolt underneath alternator as well. If it is original Holden all these will be 1/2" or 9/16" bolts and nuts.
Remove fan and water pump pulley. There you will see water pump and four bolts that hold it to the block. Remove these and ease the pump off.

Water pumps for holden sixes are cheap usually less than $30. Be careful there are two different types to suit smaller and larger pulley bolt hole centers. Take pump and pulley to shop to check.

Clean up the gasket surface on the block with a sharp scraper, a carpenters chisel works well. I always use some Permatex number 3 avaition gasket dressing on the new pump gasket and the cleaned bolt threads.

Reverse the rest and your done.

Thank you, got it off, anyone know where I would get a new original pump from? I heard they started making a different type with blades and passed it off as the genuine.

Holden DEFINITELY had problems with their replacement pumps. We had a VH (202 blue motor), from around 2000, for 5 years. Original pump went around 2003, got it replaced (luckily) by Holden Dealer.....during the next 2-3 yrs, until we sold the car.....we went through at least FIVE pumps...all replaced by Holden under their spare parts warranty at no cost, as they fitted it! No argument from the Dealer either.....just kept fitting new pumps!!
    Cheers, Pickles.
