    Straightening a Bull Bar

    After removing my winch for a bit of a service recently I can now no longer get the thing back on thanks to a bit of a dent on my bull bar right around the one of the mounting holes.

    From the pictures you can make out where the dent is. The bull bar is a genuine Land Rover steel one.

    Is this something that would be repairable with the right know-how? Since it is located more or less in line with the cross member on the chassis would it be possible to get a bottle jack in there and push the dent out? Would the cross member be strong enough to do this?

    Got enough room to swing a hammer?
    I've seen dents repaired with another vehicles winch, not sure how good an idea it is but it works.
    I've also seen jacks used but I'm not familiar with the defender crossmembers.
    Might be easier to sort out by removing the bar.

    Would be a lot easier to get it straighter removed from the behicle and beat onto a flat surface

    Years ago i bought a slightly damaged ARB bar for my RRC, it was twisted slightly so couldnt get all the bolts. What i did was to put all the bolts i could in then got an old snatch strap tied it around the bar and the other end to a big gum tree, low range reverse and i managed to straighten it .

    Fixed!!

    I finally got around to trying to sort out the dent last night after giving up searching for someone who might be able to help.

    Hitting the dent from behind resulted in nothing more than me ending up with a bruised finger to I re-investigated the jack option.

    I was reluctant to try pushing the dent out with a bottle jack braced up against the chassis cross member so I used a bridle strap wrapped around the bull bar to give the jack something to push against.

    Once the initial slack was taken up, the jack push the dent out just nicely. I had to do this a few times at slightly different angles but it seems to have worked.

    The result is by no means 'perfect' but it is good enough to be able to get my winch back on.

    That looks like 3mm steel? Is the strong enough for the winch? Warn recommend 6mm in my high mount manual...

    The bullbar is reinforced behind the mounting holes (you can't really see that from the photos) which is why I was having such a struggle removing the dent.

    I'm not an expert in these matters but I'd hope that ARB (who I presume are experts) would have made sure it was okay before installing the winch when they did years ago.
