The only proof is that they want to line their pockets. If the car is used in accordance with "normal" use there is no need for extra services. If used in arduous conditions - offroad, constant peak hour traffic then that is different.

All/most Indys recommend in between servicing. At least oil changes. But is there any proof your pride and joy will be any better off?

Also some of those indys have 'old school' mechanics that have yet to come to terms with long drainage intervals.
Well my proof of longevity is a Mazda 121 that I bought 15 years ago with about 70KK on it, and I changed oil every 5KK until 7 years ago when my daughter inherited it.
The car is still in the family and has now done 250Kk with NO oil use between changes even though my daughter is a bit slack on changes. No head gaskets , no anything really.
Yet I have read that Mazdas have a bad reputation for oil usage with High Ks.
My RRC also got changes every 5 KK, and I owned it 13 years with a lot of towing. When I last checked compression at 220Kk plus it was 150 PSI on all cylinders and oil usage of about 1L per 5KK, which was the same as when I bought it with 76KK on it.
However to most people it is not worth it as they don't keep the car long enough to matter. The poor sod who buys it and gets over 200KK is the one that pays.

I like to remember the brilliant quote from Tombie about changing the oil at 5k intervals on a Td5 being like stopping to change your condom half way through
As the above, It's entirely dependent on the vehicle, what it's use is, etc.
I do my Td5 at 12, auto every 40k, diffs and TC the same.
Perhaps my thinking is a bit old school, but oil is cheap, engines are expensive.
Also, most cars used in Australia would fall into the arduous conditions as listed by the manufacturers.
You would be better off doing oil analysis and changing the oil based on that info.

My to cents worth.. While in PNG two earth moving companies bought graders at the same time. one was meticulous about oil changes regardless of work load, the other pushed on awaiting a break in work. The latter had way more down time as a result. i never forgot that lesson and am a big fan of changing oil whatever else may get delayed. In fact, changed my daughters Barina oil yet again today, the car has about 400K on it now and runs sweet.
** TWO cents***
