have you double checked for a tight rocker on cylinder 1??
best of luck
So i got my new old engine running over the weekend!!!
https://picasaweb.google.com/1049462...12381108745410
its a 2000 td5 with 58 700k on the clock (BCU matches the engine number)
pretty much started 1st go after the fuel system was pressurised.
after the initial smoke cleared from grubby hands all over engine parts and the excitement of the engine that actually started. I noticed a miss and excessive vibration. i then gave it a bit of gas and it started knock just off idle so the engine was shut down.
Have a mate who is a LR mechanic and he came round over the weekend. we started it back up and it still smoked a little not as much as the 1st time and the knock was still apparent. We then did a compression test
no1 @ 150
no2 @ 300 +
no3 @ 300 +
no4 @ 300 +
noticed that the tip of the glow plug that came out of no1 was wet... and it didn't seem to be from oil so i guess unburnt fuel.
I did have the head rebuilt a few months ago but didn't have the budget to crack open the bottom end and go looking for problems. So it was left as is.
engine has sat at my place for almost 10 months without use and maybe twice that from the yard i got it from.
My mate suggested to try and free the rings up by soaking it in something... (google came in handy) then taking it for a long hard drive. Before pulling it out and re ringing the engine.
So the internet say the following products can help - and i stayed away from manufactures website and read reviews from ppl who have actually used the products and had good results.
Marvel mystry oil
Sea Foam
Rislone
ATF
DIESEL
So i soaked No1 in a mix of ATF and Diesel for 24 hours then blew out what was left in the cylinder refitted the glow plug and started her back up.
After only 24 hours it has made an audible and visual difference at idle and the off idle knock has gone but still runs rough. I gave it a few big revs and decided to get her up to operating temps. Once it cooled a little i pulled the glowpulg on no1 again and it was still wet. I put more atf in it and have let it soak.
Anyone had luck in freeing up stuck rings? Any adivse, tricks?
SCA sell the Rislone brand so i am going to pick a bottle of that as it had pretty go review on the interweb.
Help!!

my thought to, however your mechanic should of picked up on tight valves, not sure if td5 are interference or not but the knock could be valve kissing piston, You have had a head service and the valves would have been set.
Just a thought
Thanks for the info will look into it. The head was rebuilt so we assumed it would be ok.
Whats the best way to check?
Landrover only put 4 glow plugs on the td5![]()
td5 have hydraulic lash adjusters, if you have a tight/ open valve then you are in trouble

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Will getting the rings freed up as per diagnosis just treat a symptom? What has caused the rings to stick? Carbon build up? What are the likely causes? If it is not excessive oil a per your assessment could it be a dripping injector or other diesel leak?
Apart from oil and diesel I don't know that there are too many other things that could be getting into the motor to cause carbon build up. When you had the head off what did the pots look like? Any clues there?
Have you got a compression measurement after your attempt to soak the rings free?
Could the rings be broken?
I did notice a lot of black sludge in the sump and rocker covers when I pulled the head and sump off. In hindsight i should started soaking the pistons when the head was off but everything looked and felt ok so it was a calculated risk at the time. Even the guys that rebuilt the head said apart from being black they were ok and the headgasket was intact. I am not opposed to pull the engine out and fix the issue properly but after on 24 hours of soaking to have a change like it did i might as well stick with it just a little longer and see if i can get it to come good. Its now been soaking for 36+ hours so let see what it does this time if anything. I am amazed that after running the engine for 30 min the oil is black as black can be!! That in itself gives an indication of how black the insides were. Ill do a engine flush and put some fresh oil in it with some Rislone and see how i go
