    94 defender synchro problem

I need some help . I had little to do with manual boxes in landys . I have an option to buy a 94 defender however it has a problem with the synchro in 2nd gear its grinding a little . How easy/ hard is to rectify the problem , rough cost to pay for a pro to do it . Exchange boxes ? Any other alternative ?

    Hi Mate,

When I first got mine it would hardly change when it was cold and very clunky when changing back.

I put syntrans, not sure of spelling, in it and it came good. When it came good I replaced the oil again and it got better. Takes about a month from first change before it comes good, that was weekend driving only. It came good at Fraser with you last year and I put the second lot in when I got home.

Still clips a bit going back from 5 to 4 in a hurry, but otherwise it is now very smooth.

Spoke to Pete about it last weekend and he reckons to leave it like that. He said that the box can be a bit like that and to save my money regarding redoing the rings etc.

I am going to do mine up anyway, but not for a couple of years when we start doing long trips.

Thanks mate. In that case its all looks good . I may consider a rebuild one for around $1200 landed from Ashcroft or even an auto conversion later . $ 5500 is a bloody good price , i'll have to a bit for roadworthy though but its all labour .

Same, second was a bitch on mine. Syntrans mostly fixed that but I found the shifts deteriorated as the box got hot. Changed to motul gear 300 and its like a new gearbox, cant crunch second at all, ever and the changes don't deteriorate at all.

I'm not an oil guru, just followed what a couple of others have mentioned in another thread.

Hmm, interesting ... I've been having some issues with my gearbox shifts of late and hadn't considered switching the oil out. I just thought the synchros were wearing.
