LT95 Bottom Mount PTO - TC Input Gear clearance

I'm fitting an army style PTO drive to my LT95, which requires the TC input gear to be replaced with an input gear that has a sprocket wheel attached (Part No. FTC73 - see below).

My workshop manual says to select a shim spacer between the input gear and snap ring so the clearance between the two is less than 0.05mm. Now, the FTC73 input gear is approximately 2mm wider than standard, so that there is no room to put a shim between the input gear and the snap ring.

In fact the fit is so tight that the snap ring just snaps in (with some mild persuasion), leaving no clearance between the input gear and snap ring. If I don't pretension the input gear, I can't even insert a 0.01mm feeler gauge between the input gear and spacer at the back. A gap of ~0.07mm opens up when I put some pretension on the input gear (puller hand-tightened only).

Is the lack of a shim going to be an issue, and what is the minimum acceptable clearance between the snap ring and input gear? Should I put the snap ring on a linisher to create a small clearance or leave it as is?

    Cheers

    Bojan

G'day Bojan, The gear FTC73 should be exactly the same width as the original one. I am thinking you might have moved the mainshaft forward a tad when fitting the new gear. When this happens the shouldered thrust washer on the mainshaft in front of the rear bearing can slip off the collar it sits on and cause this problem. Take the gear back off and grip the rear end of the mainshaft by hand and rotate it several times while pulling rearwards on the shaft. When it slips back in place put the gearlever into 3rd gear to stop it moving forward again and refit the gear. That should fix it. Good idea to loctite the gear into place as well to stop movement and prevent the rear snap ring from copping a flogging from linear movement.

This has always been a problem area with the LT95.
Have it tight and force the circlip in so it does not move or have a clearance so lube gets in and it flogs back and forth.
The old series with a nut to tighten was better I reckon.
I have left my Bottom PTO off for the time being. That chain is still flogging round and round even if the PTO is not engaged. Not a good system.
Like you I am still unsure what to do.

Keith, I have given the chain issue a bit of thought over the years and reckon you could eliminate the problem by drilling and tapping the t/c housing and fitting a spring loaded chain tensioner to stop it flogging around when it stretches a bit. Alternatively just replace the chain ever couple of years, it's only 1/2inch roller chain and very cheap at a bearing shop. Just cut the required length off a roll and add a connector link. If you want to give your bottom pto a new home I know where it would be appreciated...Brian

I am glad the 101 winch pto is gear driven and not chain driven like other LT95 Ptos.

    Thanks Brian,

You were spot on! Angled the gearbox towards the rear, spun the mainshaft several times pulling/pushing axially, and sure enough, it's slid forward a couple of mm, just enough room for that shim now. What retaining compound would you use to retain splined gears? Loctite 609, 680 or whatever retaining compound you've got in the toolbox?

609 or similar medium strength. Don't use a high strength one or you will never get the gear off again without using the hot spanner

    Thanks again Brian,

I'm glad I asked... I was reading Loctite's application brochure, and one could be forgiven for thinking Loctite 680 was needed for the job!

Thankfully I had some 609 in the toolbox otherwise I wouldn't have asked.
