Swivel housing seal and axle cap oil leaks

    G'day all,

I have noticed recently that both swivel ball seals AND the axle caps are leaking badly on my 84 110. I recently rebuilt the swivel housings (and set the preload) and replaced axle caps recently, so they are in good condition (the wheel bearings are oil fed, so i also use some sealant on the axle caps). Upon investigation i noticed a lot of air rushing out when i pulled the axle caps off the hub. In fact, the air pressure was so great that it actually blew one of the caps off the hub! I automatically thought that i had a blocked diff breather, BUT it is working fine.

Any thoughts about fixing this problem would be appreciated.

    Thank you in advance!

Hubs over full? There's an inner axel oil seal so the diff breather will have no effect un less the seals been removed at some stage.

    Thanks 460cixy.

Stub axle seals have been removed.

How do i check if the hubs are over-full? Don't i just fill them up until the oil comes to the edge of the oil fill hole? Even if they are over-full, won't the excess oil pass through to the diff?

I don't think it's the stub-axle seal that is the problem, there is another seal in the throat of the swivel housing that runs on the half-shaft, this seal isolates the CVs and wheel bearings from the diff centre and axle housing, so your diff breather is isolated from your swivel housings and hubs by this seal. Removing the little seal inside the stub-axle (behind the little roller bearing) allows the CVs and wheel bearings to share oil, but they still have no breather.
