    Testing Crank Angle Sensers

    Gday All,

Just wondering if its possible to test a crank angle senser without the engine running ?

We are having problems starting an engine after a timing belt broke, and the senser is very close to one of the cam pulleys, so thinking it may be the senser, but would like to try and see if it can be tested in any way.

    With a multimeter maybe?

    Cheers Ean

Ean, most of these sensors just require a passing ferrous object to 'pulse' the magnetic field of the sensor. Try connecting the multimeter across the sensor and sweeping it past a steel or iron object. You should see a fluctuation on the meter. Analogue meters are best but digital are OK.

    Thanks Justin,

We had no luck getting any sense out of the multi meter so we removed injector #1 and connected up the fuel pipe and injector connecters and cranked the engine, with no fuel at all coming from injector, but dribble from return, so assume fuel pump is pump.

Will try a new cam sensor tomorrow.

    Cheers Ean
