Thread: What brake pads won't squeal?

I've recently replaced all pads and rotors on my P38, the rears were done first using Bendix pads with the titanium bedding in strip from Autobarn, these produced no squeal at all.
The fronts were replaced with EBC heavy duty pads (not the green ones) and they squeal like a couple of banshees under a full moon, I tried coating the backs of the pads with red anti-squeal stuff from Supercheap and its certainly helped a little as the squeal is now only there when the pads are cold at very low speeds

Interestingly, the original OEM pads had a flexible shim material on the back of the pad but the EBC pads have metal to metal contact with the calipers.

The braking force does seem greater with EBC pads though, it pulls to a stop much faster now.

I am experiencing the same annoying squeal on the rear of my defender. No idea what brand pads, they were fitted by the mechanic a while ago now. Recently I pleaded with my mechanic to put copper grease on the face between piston/calliper and pad. I was warned off grease because it traps dirt and grime causing other problems. I acquiesced and still have squealing rear pads.

Considering the bearings in my alternator are squealing like a banshee at preset the rear brakes are drowned out. The brakes on the back burner until more pressing problems are resolved.

If you have squealing rear brakes (discs), the first thing you do is check if you have the anti-squeal shims installed between the piston and pad.
