    Common rail explained

Due to things getting a bit OT and heated in another thread, this will help explain some reasons why CR engines are just the bees knees for performance tuning, especially take note of Boschs' planned latest development; variable geometry injectors

Id like to see the introduction of no cam shafts and instead actuators as well. I know its been worked on, its going to be good I think

Hell even imagine the old 3.5-4.2 with this tech

I was floored when I saw the pressure the injector delivers,1,600 bar is incredible.

Also got to learn what Hypodermic jet injection is, be careful working on those things.

    Cheers

Hi Craig, hope all is well?

Yes the pressures are incredible, but they are now working on 2000Bar systems....

The good thing about CR stuff is that AS SOON AS you crack/ loosen an injector line at an injector the engine will just stop. There isn't a lot of flow in the rail at all, so any sudden pressure drop will cease effective injection due to a huge drop in pressure.

When I was doing the mil reschooling for common rail stuff there was talk of volvo doing a camless engine.

And the reason commonrail has beaten out all other injection types (like electronic rotary pump and unit injector (TD5 is unit injector) is the timing flexibility.

With mechanical plungers like the other two you only have a small window of adjustment which makes things like late injection to burn clean a particulate filter quite difficult.
    With commonrail, it's really easy.

i was talking to a local mechanic the other day and he was boasting that he now had the ability to program replacement injectors into Toyota Prado's etc.
Seems each injector has a unique serial number and that number contains some of the injector's characteristics. It appears the engine management system needs to know which cylinder the injector is in so they can't be simply installed or swapped around

    The text from the link:
Bosch Common Rail injection system –
    Milestones of development

    1997:
First Common Rail system in the world for passenger cars.
    Injection pressure: 1,350 bar.
First production use: Alfa Romeo and Mercedes-Benz.

    1999:
    Common Rail system for trucks.
    Injection pressure: 1,400 bar.
    First production use: Renault (RVI).

    2001:
2nd generation Common Rail for passenger cars makes diesel engines even more economical, cleaner, quieter and more powerful. Injection pressure: 1,600 bar.
First production use: Volvo and BMW.

    2002:
2nd generation Common Rail for trucks gives lower emissions, improved fuel consumption and more power.
    Injection pressure: 1,600 bar.
    First production use: MAN.

    2003:
3rd generation Common Rail with rapid-switch piezo inline injectors for cars.
Advantages: up to 20 % lower emissions or up to 5 % more power or up to 3 % lower fuel consumption or up to 3 dB(A) less engine noise.
    Injection pressure: 1,600 bar.
    First production use: Audi.
The mazda skyactiv-d could be regarded as the next generation... I am interested to test one to see if the (emissions) claims are correct:
    MAZDA: SKYACTIV-D | ENGINE | SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY

It's great for Europe but I still wonder about field repairs - even though the "field" is a lot smaller than it used to be - and what happens when things go wrong with dirty fuel and etc., etc. Usually with any technology there's a trade-off.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
