    Disco driveline vibration

Took a 96 Disco for a test drive today.

Had a slight vibration when driving with cdl engaged on bitumen. Only drove a few hundred metres at low speed.
Rest of driveline feels quite good .

Any ideas what this could be ?

I'm not sure if it is faulty. But i do know you are not meant to run with the center diff locked on bitumen. Were you driving in a straight line or around corners? If in a straight line i wouldn't imagine it would have caused any issue, around corners it might have.

I drove home down the freeway about 200km with my CDL in my 1988 RRC. It didn't seem to damage the CDL. It is not the same transfer case though.

Could be that you had the CDL engaged when you shouldn't have and the trans was trying to unwind, this is why I will always acompany anyone doing a test drive, could also be a buggered uni-joint, did you tell the owner what you did and found? regards Frank.

I was testing it in the suburbs and couldn't find a suitable bit of soft ground, apart from going for a go along someones footpath, which I wasn't keen on.

Just wondering if it definitely points to tcase problems or if there is a much simpler explanation. I have a spare lt230 sitting here which is supposedly ok, but would prefer not to have to stuff around changing things.

I almost have myself talked into buying the car, it is a very dry country car, I can't find a bit of rust in it, but it has a few other issues, brakes are adequate but could be better, front rhs cv, and either alternator or battery is stuffed, steering is a little vague but quite drivable.

    Hmmm decisions, decisions

    Hi,

Years ago I accidentally drove over 1000 k's with the CDL on with a LT 95. (Young kid had been playing with all the buttons in the car and warning light didn't work)

Had a slight vibe and only got picked up due to unusual tyre wear. Back to normal (for a LT 95) with it disengaged. I wouldn't be worried.

If it had a CDL then it is the same transfer, BW doesnt have a CDL.

Straight line should be ok on bitumen for a short distance but i'd say there are other issues as i have driven on road with cdl engaged for a short distance and not had any abnormal vibes.

Decided to buy it anyway, it has other good points in its favour, will just have to see how things are when I can check it all out at home.

I think that is the key to LR ownership.

Was as green as grass when I bought my first POS but I had taken 10+ 2 doors for test drives and figured Chev and gas was good.

If one was to worry about every little 'defect' with these things they'd be stacked 10 high at the tip. (yes I know that joke)

Seems as if you are prepared to work with the little faults and deal with them (even just using a crisis maintenance schedule) ownership can be a rewarding experience.
