    300tdi as an interim engine

A while back I bought a 300tdi 130 cab/chassis with a dead engine - low compression, no water in the coolant tank so diagnosed it as likely beyond fixing.
Original plan was to dump an Isuzu into it and build up as a tourer, but for various reasons I've had to put that on hold so have just picked up a cheap higher K's (300K) "good runner" 300tdi to get it mobile.

Keeping in mind that its not a long term fitment so I don't want to throw a lot of money at it, what do you 300tdi guru's recommend to try and make sure it gives a reliable couple of years and around 20K kms.

These are the things I've put on my likely todo list:
    - fit an engine watchdog (TM2) so I can catch it before major overheat should it have a cooling or head gasket issue
    - replace any coolant hoses that are showing signs of hardness/age/damage etc
    - check the water pump for any signs its on its way out
    - replace P gasket
    - check the timing belt - if it looks OK then leave it alone
    - pull the sump and a big end/main bearing cap to check condition of crank/bearings
    - check to see if the rear main seal is leaking
    - give the intercooler a quick cleanout while disconnected
    - check the turbo to make sure there's no excessive play
    - adjust tappets
    - new filters/fluids for the engine
    - radiator: either remove and rod it or maybe just leave it and monitor temperature closely??

Anything important that I've missed, or things on my list that really aren't worth bothering with?

    Thumbs up

    Hi Steve,

I purchased a 300tdi Disco with blown head gasket & starter motor 3 months ago. On advice from a Land Rover specialist. pull the radiator get someone who knows LR's radiators tell them the problem "HG" let the radiators guys do there magic. They gave me a 2 litre icecream container half full of red clay stuff out of the side of the radiator, with the words this might have caused the HG to blow off (metal gasket came off in 5 pieces). Has been going great since.

    Regards
    David

For starters I don't have spare one just sitting in my shed (like a few people I know of ).
Also other reason's that I won't go into here, but end result is for now I've decided to get it mobile so I can at least get rego/RWC and be able to drive it while I get some of the other issues sorted.

Unless you need to replace the sump gasket i wouldnt bother checking big ends. Id get a compression test, low coolant sensor and get the radiator fixed up and make sure the cooling system is A1.

Pretty much as many jobs that i can get done for under $200 and half a days labour.

Fair enough, was going to offer you a loaner if you needed to get it going.

Yeah, I know deep down I should be getting the radiator sorted (was the first thing I did with my D1 when I bought it), but was just thinking I might be able to get away with just seeing how it went initially.

Dumb idea now I think about it more. If the engine does get a bit warm from dodgy radiator then its highly likely it would cause other (eg head gasket) issues etc that may not happen if it was kept cool.

head off, eyeball piston crowns, measure the head and the deck new gasket in torque down the head bolts and have at it.

if the heads out of spec I have one thats flat but only on minimum hardness you can have for $50 + P+H (use the aulro courier service if you can)

    Thanks Dave.
You meaning pull the head off this runner I've got, or the "dead" one that's currently in it?
New head bolts too if I go down that track?

nahh off the dead one why waste money on another one if the one you have may just want a new head?
