Ideal water temp 300 TDi what should it be?

    Hi all

I recently fitted a VDO water temp gauge and sender to my 1998 300TDI 130 (with 245kms on the clock). I have noticed that the water temp sits around 85 - 90 around town, but on the highway at 100kms/hour it rises to anywhere between 95 - 105 depending on terrain.

Is this the normal operating temp at highway speeds for a 300TDi?

All parts of the cooling system have been replaced recently including water pump, thermostat, hoses, system flushed and new coolant added. I don't have spot lights on the front bar so the radiator has full air flow (apart from an insect screen)

    Thanks
    Andrew

Maybe the insect screen could have an effect a higher speeds.

You say you've had it flushed - IME the only way to know that a radiator is properly clean is to have one of the tanks taken off and the tubes rodded (costs $100 -$125).

Doesn't answer your question about temp I know but gauges are gauges - has it been calibrated? I think all that it is indicating is that the engine is running hotter at higher speeds.

    front bar
    driving lights
    A/C condensor removed
new head, radiator, water pump 3 years ago
    fuel pump tweeked
four land rover badges across the grill

i also have a mechanical temp guage

    commuting/town run about
    90-92 degrees

touring mode, fully loaded towing 1300kg camper
    95 on the flat
nudges over 100 degree when pushing hard through hilly/ranges tryng to maintain sign posted speed...it got to 105 on my recent trip which seemed to be its max....it than drops back to 95 when cruising on the flat

i have noticed this from when i converted to a mechanical guage which was a year or so prior to replacing the headgasket

Sounds about the same as mine. Around town 85C, or 90C with the air on. I remember reading a thread on here where it was said the water pump starts cavitating at 115C?

    300tdi temp

hi mud I've got a 98 110 300tdi mine was running around 85 to 90 by the vdo towing a 1500 kg camper and loaded with work tools.
I wasn't happy so I fitted a new radiator with a extra cooling row added.
its got 335,000ks on the clock now doesn't go above 85 even with the aircon I run 50/50 coolant as well and change it every 20,000ks
but I am fanatical with coolant and oils.
other gear full maxidrive conversion, stronger cvs, warn winch,2 inch lift, super pro bushes all round, larger intercooler, stronger steering arm,
rock sliders, bash plate, diff protectors, free flowing exaust.
    cheers

Can you point me to where you bought such a radiator please ? Was it a custom job ?
