rear winch power cables -perth
Hi all.
Just asking for some advice again. I know there are already a few threads regarding winch power cables. I have been looking at a few different links and sites, and getting my self confused.
I have purchased a runva winch, 11xp, it can draw up to 430amps on full load according to the stats.
I intend to mount it into the reece hitch, I understand there are a few issues with this, but it suits my needs.
Now, a couple of questions. I'm guessing the total run from the battery to the rear will be approx 10 meters- what what be a suitable cable to run?
I'm thinking welding cable 70mm2?
Is this over kill, or not enough?
2nd, where can I buy any cable at a reasonable price in perth?
3rd- which I have only just thought of, I have seen quite a few comments about running power from the starter... Any idea of the capabilities of the starter cable? from my understanding, if I go any bigger cable than the starter cable ( if I run it from the starter ) then the power will be limited to the lesser cable. and then that could overload.

Welding supply shops. Can't recall how much I paid for it last time, but shopping around is indeed worthwhile...
I'm SoR, so would'nt know of any up around Geralton...

Thanks, what places do you know sor? I'm near armadale. I will do the ring around during the week, see what I can find. Does the 70mm2 sound about right to you?

Sounds plenty to me, going on a 30' (10 metre) boat running 35mm for a bow-thruster/anchor winch. Both are smaller than your winch, but not THAT much lighter load, I'd think.
If I'm not working tomorrow I'll nip down to Maddington and get a price. Can't recall the name of the place, except it was a 'Welder repair' business.
I would'nt suggest taking off from the starter motor, better to come off the battery via it's own main switch and fuse.
RUNVA supply a piece of 32mm cable, obviously for a front mount. For the longer run to the rear I'd guess 50mm would be sufficient. 70 is fine, but perhaps overkill.

70mm is what you'll need. 50mm would suffice but for the length of run is pushing duty cycles for the draw. BOC have it available by the metre but will need to order it in as they only stock up to 50mm. The 50 is about $17/m, I didn't price the 70 but expect around $25-30/m. I only found one electrician locally (Sydney) to crimp 70mm as well, so check out crimping first.
And all this is fresh as I've just planned out the same thing with my spare winch.

You could also consider mounting an additional 12v battery at the back of the vehicle and wire it in parallel with the main battery.
This would act as the main current source when the rear winch was in operation, it would keep the supply voltage to the winch higher and reduce the peak current loading over the cable between the two batteries.
It would also increase the overall AHr capacity of your main battery which is never a bad thing with all of the accessories that we run these days.

See? - I knew that someone (rc42) would come up with a Better Idea. Such is the value of this Forum.

At an estimated $30 per metre for 70mm, and guessing you'd need 6 metres (up/down/around and straight...) then a second battery with a metre or so of 70mm makes $ense... You would interconnect the two with a lighter cable.
The cable supplier might be kind enough to crimp on lugs for you, but if you're desperate, I've got a (Chinese) hydraulic crimper that will handle 70mm
Any preference for colours ?
Edit: In the mean time, IF you decide against the second battery inthe back (why?) then get some string or whatever, and do a dummy run from your engine-room to the rear plug point for the winch... This will tell you exactly how many metres (at $30 ....) you will need.
A length of garden hose will be pretty realistic...

I lied... Not going out to check... found and rang the place instead. Anyone who runs a 3.9 V8 would understand 'why'...
Prices as of this morning, including GST. - in round figures...
But ring them first to make 101% sure that we didn't get incl/excl. GST mucked up.
50mm = $12.50 per metre
70mm = $17.50 per metre
95mm = $22 per metre.
Cable is 'Lincoln' branded and can be had in any colour you like, as long as it's Orange.
NO, I really don't think you need 120 mm .......
Address is:-- United Machinery Repairs
Unit 12/ 11 Alloa Rd, Maddington WA 6109
Ph 9 493 6625
Standard of service is excellent and will even cut as little as one metre...

Absolutely fantastic guys, thanks for the help, and pricing.
I do want to run a second battery as it will be punishing the one battery, but at the moment, that's what I have.
I also have a disco1 v8 and know exactly what you mean with the fuel, the d2 v8 not that much better.
I think battery in the back would be great, and already thought of it, but I really need the space, and have the rear 7 seats too, I had also thught of cutting and making space under the rear seats as I think there would be a heap of room, but again, time, money and skill hold me back. When I get round to mounting second battery, I would like to throw the air box away, run a snorkel or stainless pipe up the side, running through the corner by the bulkhead, and then that would leave a load of space for the next battery,
Thanks for the help, when its finally done, hopefully in a couple of weeks I will let you know how it went, and maybe try out the winch.

Even with the airbox gone you still need the MAF and the ABS block is in the way. Best bet if you want it in the engine bay i either the ARB tray in the pass side rear corner or I'm in the midst of remaking the original battery box to fit two yellow tops, the front winch solenoid and headlight and driving light relays plus the original jack and cover.
