URGENT: Help needed Disco1 broken down NT

    Hey guys

I have a friend who is on a trip in to the NT who's mate in a 300tdi disco
    can not start his car.

basically they went off for a swim keys were left on the side when they came back to the car he couldnt unlock it.

He noticed there is some moisture coming out of the button on the fob so stripped the fob apart and dried it out bought it a new battery, and its still not working

Now they called me to find out where the Immobliser is, he said his hazards are going off so I thought it might be his inertia switch however I have since been informed that the inertia on the diesel does not stop the car from starting it only apparently does it on the petrol as it cuts the fuel pump (if someone knows otherwise please feel free to correct).

So I have been informed that the immobliser is in behind the radio someone. I thought it was under the steering column can any one say for sure where it is? I said though that even if he does find it he would likely need a plug to by pass the immobiliser possibly not a case he can just disconnect....

he has unlocked the car with the key he can turn key and get his radio on etc however he informs me that he has no lights on the instrument cluster. and the car wont start and the red immobliliser light is just steadily blipping away.

when talking to him about his key fob (as mine has had a dry solder in the past) I have also established he possibly has an after market alarm system on it as his Key Fob is grey has one large oval button and one small oval button and it takes a AAA battery.

Does anyone have any ideas??? of things he can try and do

    the car details are:

    Discovery 1 MY94
    300tdi
    Manual

The things he has done so far..

Dried out the fob - Nothing
unlocked and locked the car with key and tried to start the car - Nothing
he has also disconnected his cranking battery for just over 10mins - Nothing.

They are currently in Kooinda a tow truck turned up while I was on the phone to him with no tools or anything (he called the NRMA) so is likley to get towed to the nearest town which he thinks might be Jabaroo.

Any help to get these guys back on their road trip would be greatly appreciated...

if there are ideas of things to do or where to find stuff let me know and I will text them on to him.

I've had that problem a couple of times when battery disconnected. Try standing next to drivers door and pressing lock button 4 times about 2 presses per second. This seems to reset my system and everything works again. Good luck.

Just read he may have aftermarket system so who knows, give it a go anyway

Isn't there an immobilizer disable code you can enter by using the door key. Lots of jiggling but I think that will make it work. Sometimes the code is written in the owners manual.

Like to help but Jabiru is approx 300kms away from Darwin.

Haven't had to deal with this sort of issue. I think you can pre-empt this problem with a 'spider', basically a plastic plug with wires that loop back into itself. You unplug something and install this device, as I think you may be guessing, behind the dash (behind radio?) The 'spider' feeds signal back to the computer as I understand it, fooling it into thinking it is still in charge. If your friend understood the wiring behind his dash he could bodge something to match the 'spider' idea.

What would I do if I had tools with me and some electrical wire? Try and get the fuel cut off solenoid on the injector to open by applying electrical current (not sure if it a latching solenoid or other) or remove it and reseal the line. Turn on the key and hot wire the starter – length of wire, one end to battery positive and other to starter solenoid.

Otherwise, local mechanic in Jabiru or long tow to Darwin.

    found this from loanrangie

'So essentially its only the immobilizer thats been bypassed, i did mine with a wire direct from battery to inj. pump solenoid with a switch in between.
One of my fair weather jobs is to repair the spider.'

From the sounds of it he has a aftermarket immobiliser. I had one on mine in Auz. It was haphazardly wired up beside the fuse box under the steering wheel. Suggest to him to have a looksee there and he may be able to bypass it and reconnect up the wires in their origional position. Otherwise a wire from the positive terminal to the stop solinoid on the pump would see him on the move with a bump start.

The spider is in behind the radio and several circuits run through it. Dave (Blknight) has suggested this in an old thread.

    "to easy....

rig up a spade terminal connector with an aligator clip.

this goes from the battery to the fuel cut off solenoid on the fuel pump, powering this up makes the engine live and ready to start if its a manual you can roll start it from here.

For the starter motor you can rig a similar bypass but all you really need to do is short the primary positive feed (the big fat wire from the battery)on the solenoid to the signal line on the solenoid (the little thin wire that comes from the ignition barrel

Theres a couple more advanced versions that Ive seen rigged up but thats the "get you out of trouble" version"

    Thanks Pop..very helpful

and than you to all the others with suggestions..

as for the spider bypass i'm aware of it and have told him about it but as I'm unsure how his aftermarket alarm system is wired up its a little hit and miss...and not something I would think he could rig up out in the bush...

I bascailly said as soon as you get the chance get the immobiliser bypassed regardless of whether it is at fault or not!! as it can leave you stranded.
