thermostat ?
I have a 1997 V8 Discovery that has developed a tendancy to overheat intermittently. It is not load or weather related and the vehicle can have been operating for an hour or two of continuous driving or just 15 minutes before it overheats.
I have checked the obvious things like coolant levels and cap pressure etc but can't work out whats going on.
I am suspicious of the viscous fan assembly as the resistance to turning by hand when the engine is at operating temp is not great. I would be very keen to hear from anyone else who has experienced the same or who can offer some advice. Thanks Nick

3 things tp check
1. thermostat (just replace) be careful it stays in place . I superglue gasket at 2 ponts to hold it in.
Faulty therm gives this fault normally.
2. viscous fan (can hear on this motor when it comes in)
3. Mud or dust etc in unswept rad area (must remove to hose thru until you can see visually)

I have a similar problem with my Range Rover. I have replaced the thermostat only 6 months ago, so doubt that is the problem.
My viscous fan does not have much resistance even when hot, and I thought that this may be the problem, although I have not had time to further look into it.
When the viscous fan is hot what should the resistance be? For example, should it be fully locked up, or moderately difficult to turn, or still easy to turn. Mine is easy to turn with only a small amount of resistance.

It will have a moderate resistance but will soon go soft when you stop engine.
You will hear it when it comes on.
When 1st starting from cold in the morning it will come on. It will turn off after a few secs as engine spins up.

Thanks for the advice.
Just in case anyone is interested heres an update on my intermittent overheating problems.
I have had the radiator out stripped and cleaned (only 15% blocked) and the thermostat replaced then had the whole system pressure tested to check for possible head gasket problems.
The result is that I now have no overheating problems and no head gasket issues (fingers crossed) and suspect that the problem was with the thermostat all the time. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]
PS As I was driving home from the mechanics my alternator haeomoraged costing me more money.....impeccable timing [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif[/img]
