According to BAS LR put code into the ECU (like copywrite protection) that does not allow it to be over written like in most remaps. That is why I understand these engines cannot be remapped but the cruder add on modules may work as they either feed false information into the ECU or modify the ECU output to increase commonrail pressures etc. As I guess is the subject of this thread these can be a bit rough and ready and could in theory cause issues even in normal use.
As far as EGRs are concerned - BAS is attempting to develop plug in electronic module that plugs into the EGR plug in the loom that mimics the electronic inputs and outputs of the EGR.
I like to think that I had a hand in pointing Pete along this route but he may have already been thinking about it.
Two years ago my EGRs failed on my EU4 2.7 and I bought two new ones but was a bit daunted by doing there installation. At that time Pete was trying to develop ECU remap that would disable the EGRs and in tests on South African D3s it seemed to be working but not on UK vehicles. I put this map onto my car but it did not work - disabled the EGRs but codes and lights were on. At that time I connected the new EGRs that I had to the loom only (not to the exhaust) and found that I had no codes or warning lights. I suggested to Pete he might develop an electric module but as I said he may have already been thinking about it.
I subsequently blanked my engine and left the new EGRs connected sitting on top of the engine cover and have not had any codes and lights proving that if the EGRs are serviceable EU4 engines can be blanked. My intention was to mount the new EGRs on the firewall behind the ABS module with a wiring loom extension but havn't done this in anticipation of the plug in module being released by Pete but it has taken a bit longer than expected. I believe it has been developed and works and he is looking for suppliers to build it so it will be on the market soon.
So my EU4 engine is blanked, remapped for max torque at about 100-110kph, serviceable EGRs not fitted but connected to the wiring loom.

Any tuner who knows about the switches in the code they can do it. Perhaps the tuners that have been asked just don't know.
BTW, the write-protection change in EDC17 that stopped them being flashed through the OBD2 port wasn't just a landrover thing. It affected every EDC17 vehicle that I know of. That was when tuners began pulling the ECU's, opening them and flashing on the bench.
I have heard that copy protection can now be surpassed. But I haven't experienced it.
My newest vehicle is 2009 EDC16 which can be openly flashed through the OBD2 port. My oldest vehicle can be flashed with a screwdriver and 10mm spanner.
When did discos swap from EDC16 to 17?
With the introduction of the 2010MY. This was a Ford incentive. As neither the Jaguar tuners, nor the LR tuners can disable the EGRs, even on the benchtop, I'd suspect that either:
1) Ford have had something to do with this (they're defending a class action in the US regarding diagnostic variations from standard),
2) all Jaguar and LR tuners are idiots, or
3) there is some other reason for NOT disabling the EGR's that is specific to these engines.
Cheers,
Gordon

So you know for certain that the EGR switches have been tried and either failed or are non-existant in the 3.0sdv6 EDC17 ECU?
Very few modern tuners are engineers. Most are computer geeks who are good at tweaking code. Which unfortunately explains the smoke-belching quality of many performance remaps.
But that's a story for another thread.
Dougal you think you are God's gift to all things diesel and you made the statement that any competent tuner could do this work.
I know little about this stuff and am simply asking you to justify your claim when the one tuner I have had personal experience with who happens to be recognised by the Landrover fraternity as the world expert in this area, has not as yet been able to crack this issue despite working on it for some time.
You made the claims but as usual you fail to back them up with anything substantial.
