Puma won't start
Hi all,
Looking for some advice. Mrs came home this evening in the defender, all apparently working fine. Went to put it away 10 minutes later and won't start. It's not the imobiliser, on turning the key I get a rapid clicking from a (30 amp I think) grey relay under the drivers seat, odometer flickers as does the abs lamp. Nothing turns over.
Thinking duff battery, its on its original, some years old now. Am I right or barking up the wrong tree, unfortunately cant try a jump start till tomorrow, plugged it into a charger and that seems fine, although understand that's not always the sign of a healthy battery.
Advice appreciated!
Cheers
Ian

It could be the starter motor. Try tapping it with a tyre iron or something to that effect while someone else tries to start it

Good thought, gave it a go but no improvement, mind you looking at the price of starter motors im quite relieved! connected up a jump starter pack, borrowed from work, that improved the symptoms, engine turned a bit bit not enough to spin it into life so thinking, hoping, its an amps thing...

Could be a loose battery connection causing high resistance. If you have checked the starter motor, try the earth points and the battery connections. Try running a jumper from the negative battery to the engine block.

If you put the headlights on whilst cranking, do they go out completely. If yes, then the fault lies in battery or main power feed ccts. If the lights done change then issue lies in low current ccts, such as the relays or starter motor solenoid.

Loose or corroded earth as well, there is one above the TC as well on some models,or more than likely a stuffed battery. Also check battery terminals, probably already done this.
Good luck.

Dead or a couple of dead cells in the battery , Which in turn no amount of jump packs will start it , The battery needs to be diconnected completely try to start it with just the jump pack connected or a new battery

Thanks for your advice all, seem to be getting most of these problems, lights dim/go out but disconnecting the battery and using jumper box only gets a small amount of Crank but no start. Ill check all the earths and go with a new battery.one interesting symptom is, if I charge the suspected dud battery, on first go at starting I get a single spark off the + terminal, no short on it, connections clean and tight. Does this bear out the dead cell or two theory? Anyway off to get a new battery...

New battery did the trick, the old one was only producing 300 Cold cranking Amps instead of the required 800... But the - terminal clamp on the transfer case was looking pretty grim, so that got replaced too. Thanks to all, not bad with mechanics but auto electrics are definitely a dark art!

Well that's a pretty good result. How old was the old battery?
