Sounds interesting - what is the link. Locked torque converter as I understand means full mechanical linkage (ie hydraulics not in use) so fuel could potentially be saved, but at what cost in buying the unit?
Just a quick question. On Fleabay there is a person selling modified valve body's to suit 300 tdi and v8 autos locks up third and then acts a normal over 80 kph. anyone fitted one and with what results.
Quote:....Up for Auction is a fully tested ZF4HP22 cable controlled Modified valve body to universally suit V8 and TDi land rover .
Custom shift kitted to enable lock up in the torque converter to operate in 3rd gear at speeds higher than 60km and turn off at 45km/h automatically.
Main purpose is to reduce fuel usage and heat from the the drive train. It increases torque at lower rpm.
It's a great tool when towing and hill climbing with a load.
Can be fitted by mechanic or transmission specialist, with kick down cable adjustment knowledge. Example . At 90-100km/h normally in third gear the engine would be over 2500 rpm with the torque converter unlocked, maybe trying to overtake or climb a hill. With the modification rpm would be around 1900-2000 rpm with the torque converter locked, then works normally in overdrive. Works great in summer on the highway with the air conditioner in use.

Plenty of info about those valve bodies on here, have a search. Manuels in thomastown in Vic do them, guru's on the zf![]()
If it suits cable controlled boxes then it's for the 4HP22H, fitted to the D1's/RRC's.
As a comparison the 4HP22 & 24EH (D2/P38 (really late RRC?)) are slip 3rd, lock up 3rd, slip 4th, lock up 4th. Both lock up's happen at 80k/hr but can be manipulated to occur with the right foot. They'll hold lock up down to70k/hr officially but mine will hold down to 60, I don't know if it's a result of the Ashcroft build or again right foot.
Price was $300 + postage from memory
Re Cluba's comments. Have several Disco 1 and RRC auto's and only noticed lockup in 4th - drops about 250 rpm off the dial. Haven't notice this slip 3rd and lock 3 in the auto sequence. I thought the kick down was a valve changer to keep you temporarily in the gear lower than the one already in - not that it really adds much to acceleration - more like just holds the current speed. Or is the lock 3 stage what you get when you kick down from 4th? Ashcroft showed me how to manipulate the spring in the thyristor(?) valve so 4th comes in at below 80kph (bought one of their reconn boxes which changed above 80 - bit annoying).
Hence my comments were as a comparison to the D2/P38 boxes. There's no mention of what model Bazzle has, don't want to see anyone end up with something that doesn't suit.
My bad re what i am driving you would think i should no better by now.![]()
my drive is a 1997 defender 110, fitted with 300 tdi, disco Auto and just recently swapped out the defender transfer for a disco one.
Only been in a week but must say its a nicer drive,no issues with take off. quieter on the road as well.
