Stuck Td5 waste gate
It seems that the waste gate in my Disco is stuck. I have given the mechanism a good spray of WD 40 , while cold and let it soak. But it is still not freeing up. Therefore my question is how much force and how to apply it is safe without breaking any thing ? I have tried locking on the vice grips on the un-threaded section and tried a push-pull motion from the front , but compared to you tube vids this thing is going nowhere.Any tips or thoughts will be appreciated.

Hi Trog,
I found it easy to take the actuator arm off (remember to count threads to the locking nut) and then give it a gentle tap until it starts moving. I haven't had over boost for a while, but I believe that you may have to do it a couple of times.

Try a mixture of ATF and Acetone (50/50), it works wonders, WD40 is useless, Regards Frank.

Will try the Atf\ acetone mix. In trying to free up using force how much and where should I apply. Tried to tap a pir of fixed vice grips but no luck. As an experiment I un bolted the actuator and was able to pull it back almost to the end of the threads but cannot get any foreward[ towards firewall ] movement. Also tried to get the heat shroud off but with the tools I own cannot get to the bolt behind the turbo. May have to dis assemble second battery and tray.
I suppose it will become another mechanical adventure like the need to remove the aftermarket CDL actuator and mounting bracket to access the gearbox oil drain !
Thanks for the tips, and as my computer is no longer I will check back in a few days from the library computer.

Hi Trog
I had a D2 Td5 waste gate kept getting stuck and motor would limp on over boost. Took the actuator off and was able to use a pliers and a small hammer to tap it out of the stick. In mine there was a bit of side movement (along the shaft) and that let me find a soft spot. I kept putting it back into the sticking posn and then re-unsticking it. This wore away stick (it took me over 60 cycles to get mine free). I just used WD40 but the guys from British Off Road were very helpful and told me it was most likely the blind bearing on the other side of the shaft that had worn a bit deeper and was letting the waste gate move sideways more than it should, this was then allowing the "flap" to rub in the housing, so the lube didn't make a difference in my case as the "stick" wasn't in the bearing. Worked a treat for me.
