Calckity Clackity Clack in my D1, R380 or clutch

I had begun to notice a 'tightness' in driving my '98 D1, shifts were okay and from memory I can't remember any real noise, just seemed to be working harder. We don't tow regularly and spend most of the time out here, far west NSW, driving at speed in 5th. On a run into Broken Hill I suddenly had a 'wrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr' CLACKITY CLACKITY CLACKITY......'.
Had it towed home and dropped the transmission assuming something drive related. The clutch release arm showed significant wear as well as the slipper pads, in fact the whole clutch assembly loooked buggered, fresh marks on the pressure plate fingers and there were metal shavings in the bell housing. I guess my question is will a clutch simply let go while driving, is it still prudent to delve deeper into the gearbox to check things out? How easy is it to take a peek into the R380 to see if everythings ok?

Of Concern are Clicks, Clacks and Clonks.

By the looks of it you have found the source of your noise

As for the gearbox, why worry when there's whistles, whines and wows.

Also have a look at the alloy sleeve that the throwout bearing slides on, if it has steps or marks worn into it where the race has been working to, there is a cast steel version available as a replacement.
