Anderson plug for Air tyre compressor

    Hi all,

My recently acquired D3 comes with two Anderson Plugs: one at the back of the car and the other in the ABS box (previous owner used this to charge spare battery) - both have constant power.

I'm wandering if I can use these plugs for the tyre air compressor when going offroad rather than connecting off the battery. This is especially useful when doing the rear Tyres as the leads on the compressor are only so long (both power and air).

I'd like to wire in Anderson connectors into the air compressor wiring and when needed use one or the other.

    What's the opinion?

    Doable/don't bother/can't do it etc

    Thanks Mike

exactly what I have done. Just make sure the fuse and wire is heavy enough.

On the car the 2nd plug has 6mm2 wire - primary has 13. both have 50 amp fuses.

The camper has andersens front (charge line to car) with 13mm2, and one on the back for solar input with 6. I can run the compressor of either end of the camper, or the back of the car. Lead & hose just reaches the front.

    100% doable.

Just make sure the existing wiring to the anderson plugs is heavy enough.
I'm sure if it was for a battery charger type thing it would be but just double check anyway.

Oh and make sure it's fused up by the battery.

Exactly what I have done. But when doing I had an Anderson plug on compressor lead as well making a seperate short lead Anderson to alligator clips so it could be used on another vehicle if needed.

Thanks guys there's fuses so I know it's looking good.

I do have a big plug under the bonnet and a small plug at the back if the car.. I'll visit a parts shop and see if I can get the matching opposite ends.

This car is full of surprises.. Love it!

I did the same as Kenleyfred put an Anderson plug connection (2 plugs joining) and kept the alligator clips on the end so can be used either way.

At the very top of the page here, is a link to "Shop". Just under the banner.

Have a look here, as the proceeds go towards running the site.

Most compressors have a 45A thermal cut out. Thus a minimum of 8GA (56A) wire and 50A fuse (circuit breaker is better). The normal size anderson plugs are 50A so it should work a treat.

If you have doubts, PM Tim at Traxide and he'll set you straight.

If the Anderson plug is outside the vehicle then be sure to wash and spray oil it after off road trips, especially if you've been near sea water, otherwise the metal contacts will turn green and corrode/dissolve fairly quickly.

Otherwise its a great source of easy to connect 12v power, I use one to connect my trailer battery to the secondary battery in the back of my P38.
