Simply the engine will be good for at least 500kms if it has a good maintenance history the auto box may need some attention, again depending on maintenance history and previous use.

As said before, it is all about maintenance. With 300K, there is a long list of bits that simply "wear out", like universal joints, seals and bushes, while others will fail if not maintained (mostly bearings).

if the previous owner had the car maintained, then you can drive it for another 200K. If not, then you'll be learning lots about land rover mechanics soon.

A 2001 Might not have the internals for CDL (series 2 discovery diff lock or http://www.erikburrows.com/index.php...is+CDL+Linkage) which may be important if you want to go offroad.

If the vehicle has been serviced by an LR specialist the engine will do many more klms. Owning a disco 2 is a bit of a hobbie. They are not for the faint hearted with zero mechanical knowledge unless your happy to pay a mechanic for ever little thing that goes wrong. There are a few knowen issues just like any other brand car.
I owned a discovery 2 td5 a few years ago. I had bad luck with it and replaced a lot of parts. I am a mechanic and got all parts cheap. I worked out if i had paid for all the repairs it would have cost about $6000. I sold it and bought a new patrol. 12 months later i bought a new Navara. 2 years later im back in a discovery 2.
These cars are addictive. They are great to drive on road and amazing offroad. Saying that ive owned the car 4 weeks and ive had the transmission out and apart, new radiator, new viscous engine fan and new sway bar d bushes.
I think get the car checked out by a workshop that knows discoveries. I wouldnt hesitate to buy one with 300,000 kms if the owner could prove maintenance.

Wot they said! If its been looked after then it should be good. Does the price reflect the kms? If you are able to take it for a test drive (hour or more), then anything that might be an issue should become apparent in a decent test drive. Find the usual long hill, and make it work. If you are not mechanically minded then perhaps look for something with less kms. Good luck in your quest!

Oh yeah and i replaced the bearing in the timing cover that spports the engine fan pulley. That bearing was the reason i had to replace the radiator and engine fan.
Just make sure you have it inspected by someone who knows these cars.
