    Railko bushing, seating

    Hey all,

I got these new swivel housings from a well known 4x4 shop, they are rechromed.

I am having issues fitting the Railko bush, it doesn't seem to drive flush.

The other is even worse and sits about 5 mm out.

Is the one pictured in far enough?

    Cheers

Well I think I've answered part of the problem, one of the swivels is just wrong.
I don't know what it's from but it's not a series vehicle, the race is nowhere near deep enough to accommodate the bush.

Also, the bushings are not the same, one is close, the other is about 1mm taller.
As it stands I have no idea what the bloody dimensions are meant to be.

I'm getting pretty sick of crap parts and shops who don't know what the hell they are selling, especially when you pay a premium price.

I fitted the best bush to the RIGHT swivel and it seems to go in ok.
    Look right to you all?

Doesn't look right to me, with the railko bushes I fitted to my S1 the top taper was flush with the top of the swivel hub. The two should certainly be the same.

Yeah my series 3 was pain free too, none of these problems.

Does the last image look OK? The bush sits maybe .5mm above flush.

I don't know how much of a problem this is anyway, as long as the bush is fully seated (ie. it cannot push in further once vehicle weight is on it), is it OK?

Im sending one housing back as it it clearly wrong and from a different vehicle. (Deefer??)

I think the important measurement would be the height of the railko washer inside the bush when assembled. If it is too high you would have to add too many shims on assembly to get the preload right. Can you compare with the old one?
Also if the railko housing sits too high it might stop you getting the outer part of swivel housing on past it?
When I fitted mine the raiko housing went in all the way to seat on the step in the bottom of the housing. It was very tight at first and I had to reduce the diameter a bit. Are you sure it is going in all the way?

You don't have a Stage 1 swivel by any chance do you?

The Railko bush sits higher in the stage 1 to give clearance on the CV. You can see if its a Stage 1 by looking inside the ball and seeing the machining marks where the inside is relieved for the CV.

I cant compare unfortunately because I am converting from the old spring/cone to Railko.
I have also replaced both housings as the originals were damaged.

Yes im positive it is in as far as it will go, I measured the depth of the socket in the housing and compared to the depth of the bushing to check.

Unfortunately because I am converting I cannot measure the old/original bush, so I cannot be sure that the new ones are correct spec.

I suspect one of the housings is exactly that, the "race" that the bush and bearing fits into was nowhere near as deep as it should have been.
Thats the one I plan to send back.

I think that 0.5mm one would be close enough to try assembly, but I would be asking the supplier for another one to match. If you can get the two castings together and don't need an excessive number of shims I think it would be ok.

Have you thought about converting to tapered roller bearings the same as early 1948 models and all Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 and 2?
