Thread: Help please! Broken key in ignition

Try either a magnet, or a tiny bit of superglue on the end of a small flat head screwdriver. If you're quick enough the glue should stick to the bit of key and allow you to pull it out.

left hand drill bits from an ezy out kit will make short work of the shear heads (center pop them properly first) and usually take them out on the way in , you can then replace them.

That gets the key barrel out.

Dont try using a screwdriver, it wont work the screwdriver is the wrong shape.

you can use another key blank with the end cut off and filed flat (thats best)

or a piece of 2mm fencing wire that been hammered flat(ish) till it fits into the center of the key barrel with a chisel head on it. while its still got a flat end on it coat the wire with some cooking oil and insert is serveral times to lube the inside of the barrel and prevent the super glue from the next bit sticking to where you dont want it to.

Now notch the end of the wire into a V shape and put the drop of super glue into the V and insert it carefully.

If your lucky it comes out. If you can find it its better to use the gel type of super glue.

Has the key just come out of the plastic fob. My D2 used to do this often, get a pair of pointy nose pliers and pull out the key and plug it back into the fob . Now that its happened it will happen again more easily so be careful how you pull it out in future and keep a small pair of pliers in the centre bin. Take a pic of the fob and key and post it to make sure this is the problem.

If the end of the key is broken off, use the remaining part of the key with a smear of Super Glue on its end and insert and hold against the broken off bit till dry and then carefully remove, good luck, Regards Frank.

and.....after the advice.....do we have a result?

Shear bolts often respond to tapping then round with a centre punch or cut a slot across them with a junior hacksaw. If you want a lock assembly complete with 2 keys PM me I am wrecking a D2 at the moment.

It happened twice to me, so I used araldite and glued the sucker into the fob.

Super glue and locks don't mix!!
I'd say you have 3 options
1:Call a Locksmith
2:Remove the ignition and take it to a Locksmith
3:Get lucky and start the car with the other half of the key and drive to the Locksmith
